Dr. George P. Compton Born in Terre Haute, Indiana, on March 13,1933 Dr. George P. Compton died peacefully and free of pain on Wednesday, October 24, with his loving wife, Jan, and family at his side. He was preceded in death by his parents, Luther and Ruby, and sister, Alice, and is survived by brother, Charles, of Terre Haute. Dr. Compton earned his undergraduate degree from Purdue University and his doctorate from Indiana University School of Dentistry in Indianapolis, IN, in 1957. While in dental school, he met his wife-to-be, Jan Miller, who was a Registered Dental Hygiene student at the same time. Upon graduation in 1957, Dr. Compton was stationed in Korea at a M*A*S*H unit, where he served as a Captain in the United States Army. After returning home to the U.S., he married his wife Jan and he served state side at Fort Riley, Kansas, until his discharge in 1959. Dr. Compton began his private practice that same year in Hammond, IN and became a member of the American Dental Association and the Indiana Dental Association. He eventually relocated his dental practice to Munster, IN. He became president of the NW Indiana Dental Society and served as a member of the Indiana State Board of Dental Examiners from 1984 to 1990 and served as president of the Dental Examiners in 1988. Dr. Compton was appointed to the Munster Medical Research Foundation in 1969, prior to the opening of Munster Community Hospital in 1973. In addition to being a recognized founder of Community Hospital, he also later served as a founder of Hartsfield Village in Munster. For the last 60 years, Dr. Compton has served his Northwest Indiana community in a number of other capacities, as well. To begin with, he and is wife Jan have raised 3 children: Dr. Eric, also a dentist, (wife Julie) with children Evan (Liz), Taylor, Andrew, and Berlyn; Dr. Adam, also a dentist (wife Jeannine) with children Lexi and Christopher; daughter Janna (husband Dr. Sky Allen), Director of Compton and Broomhead Dental Home Health. Beginning in 1960, Dr. Compton was a Sunday School teacher at South Side Christian Church Hammond/Munster, where he also served as an Elder and Sunday School Superintendent for 25 years. He was a Cub Scout leader, Little League Coach, and Indian Guides leader, and a Girls Softball c oach for his 3 children during their younger, formative years. A better example of a wonderfully kind husband and father/grandfather would be hard to find. The photo accompanying this tribute to him basically "sez it all" about the George Compton whom his family and friends knew so well and loved so dearly.
