Catherine H. Shortle  

Catherine Shortle passed away in Columbus, Indiana on February 15, 2008. She was 95. Catherine was born in Kokomo, Indiana on May 22, 1912 to C. V. and Belle Haworth.

She had three siblings, Robert, Edna and Josephine. She was particularly close to her sister Josephine. They maintained a promise from their youth to name their first daughters after each other which they did. She attended school in Kokomo, graduating from Kokomo High School in 1930. She attended Indiana University graduating in 1935 and was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority. Catherine loved to dance and reveled in telling stories of all the dances she had attended during her high school and college years.

Catherine married George E. Shortle on Oct. 26, 1936. They lived most of their married life in Tipton where they raised three children. Catherine was very active in Tri Kappa. She also was an avid bridge player and loved playing competitive bridge. They were members of the Kokomo Country Club and the Columbia Club in Indianapolis. They maintained a second home at Culver, Indiana on Lake Maxinkuckee where they entertained family and friends for many years. Later in life they traveled extensively to foreign countries, which was a great source of enjoyment for both of them. George preceded her in death in 1984 and for several years Catherine took over many of the business activities of her husband. She later stated the George and Catherine Shortle Family Foundation and remained a trustee until her death. She also started a scholarship in the name of her father, C.V. Haworth who had been the Superintendent of Kokomo Schools for many years, and a scholarship in the name of her husband, George E. Shortle who had served as the President of the Tipton School Board. In 1997 Catherine moved from Tipton to Columbus to be closer to her daughter. Here she became an active member of the Grace Lutheran Church.

Catherine is survived by her three children: Josephine S. “Jody” (William) Harter of Columbus; George E. (Judy) Shortle, Jr. of Santa Barbara, Calif.; and Robert H. (Barbara) Shortle of Carmel, Ind. She is survived by 11 grandchildren; Marjorie (Brett) Pumphrey of Littleton, Colo.; Scott (Amy) Harter of Eugene, Ore.; James (Cathy) Harter of Carmel; Doug (Brooke) Harter of Indianapolis; Robert (Leah) Harter of Westminister, Colo.; John (Martine) Shortle of Oak Hill, Va..; Rebecca Shortle of San Francisco, Calif.; Nicholas Shortle of Kansas City, Mo.; Margaret Shortle of Chicago, Ill.; Catherine Shortle, of New York, N.Y.; and Alexander Shortle of Bloomington, Ind. Catherine is also survived by 15 great-grandchildren. Family was always very important to Catherine and it became her primary focus later in life.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Grace Lutheran Church Foundation of Columbus, the Columbus Philharmonic Society, Hospice of South Central Indiana, the C.V. Haworth Scholarship at Kokomo High School or the George E. Shortle Scholarship at Tipton High School.

Calling hours will be between 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Wednesday, February 20 at the Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home at 1029 Washington Street in Columbus, Ind. and from 9:30 a.m. until service time Thursday at the church. Funeral services will be held at the Grace Lutheran Church in Columbus at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, February 21, with Pastor John W. Armstrong officiating. A graveside service will follow at Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis at 2:30 p.m. that afternoon.
