Josephine Robinson of Pioneer family dies
Funeral services for Muss Josephine Robinson, 84, whose family history is
closely linke with the history of Indianapolis, will be at 11 a.m.
tomorrow in FLanner & Buchanan Mortuary.
BUrial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery.
Miss Robinson, prominent at one time in Indianapolis musical circles, died
Saturday in her h ome in the Marott Hotel
Although Miss robinson was born in Chicago, she spent all but three years of
her life in Indianapolis.
Her father was Joseph robinson, formerly a banker in the western part of
New York State. Her mother was ELlizabeth Yandes RObinson daughter of Daniel
Yandes first treasurer of Marion county.
Yandes came to Indianapolis from COnnersville in 1821, when the area only
recently chosen for the state captial was called "the donation" and had no
streets. He built his first log cabin home near the northeast corner of
what is now washington and Illinois. He was elected treasurer in 1822
Later he lived successfully on the site of the present State life Building and
the site of the present Fedreal Building. The last home Yandes built was at 122
E. Michigan, where the Indiana Univeristy Etension Building now stands. He, his
daughter and two granddaughters lived there many years.
Miss Robinsons tudied music here, in Cincinnati and in New York. She was a
solloist in the Second Presbytrian church, of which her grandfather was one of
the founders. She also was a contralto in a guarteet at that church and sang
often in New York churches.
SHe was one of the firt graduates of the old Indianapolis High School to be
admittd to Vassar COllege, which she attended for a year.
Interested in poetry, she was author of numerous poems, four of which were set
to music. The are "When Thoughts Are Thoughts of Good:, "Garden of Thoughts"
"The Day I Forgot" and :Lead Me to the Light"
At one time, Miss Robinson was a member of Indianapolis Matinee Musicale. Widely
known for her musical abilitiy and actine in YWCA work, she organized a YWCA
chorus years ago.. She was a member of the society of Indiana Pioneer and the
Second Church of CHrist, Scientist.
A sister Miss Mary Yandes Robinson, is the only immediate survivor. Among
possessions of the two sisters are a 100-year old guitar which Miss Robinson
sometimes used for accompaniment and which had belonfged to her mothe, and a
grandfather cloxk which has been in the Yandes family 200 years.

Among the trust funds created are $100,000 the income from which is to be paid to
Anna B., Mary Y and Josephine Robinson. $150,000 is left in trust to other relatives
