Joseph D. Barnette, Sr.



Joseph D. Barnette, Sr., 101, passed away February 27, 2010. He was b orn November 12, 1908 in Rochester, Indiana. A lifelong resident of Indiana, he lived in South Bend until 1969; in Culver , IN at Lake Maxinkuckee until 2006 and presently resided in Indianapolis at Hoosier Village.

His business career started in the backroom operations at the bank in South Bend, Indiana now known as First Source Bank, eventually working his way up to become President for over 20 years. Mr. Barnette was also elected president of the Associates Corporation, a New York Stock Exchange listed finance company. After Associates Corporation was acquired by Gulf and Western, he was then elected to their board and served in that capacity until his retirement.

Mr. Barnette was a recipient of the Sagamore of the Wabash from Governor George N. Craig, the Silver Beaver Award from the Boy Scouts of America and numerous other business and community awards.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 78 years, Frances E. (Aitchison) Barnette; two sons, Joseph D. Barnette, Jr. and wife Charlene of Indianapolis and Dennis A. Barnette of Chicago; three grandchildren, John C. Barnette of San Francisco, CA, Michael J. Barnette of Indianapolis and Anne B. Zalubowski and her husband Matt of Annapolis, MD.

Memorial services will be private.
