William H. Poston Bill Poston left our sight, but not our hearts on November 8, 2009. Bill was born on January 14, 1922 in Lafayette, Indiana.

He graduated from The Citadel in 1943 and was called to active duty in the U.S. Infantry and Air Force in 1943.

After his honorable discharge he became the plant superintendent of Poston-Herron Brick Company in Attica, Indiana until 1960.

He then moved to Tucson, AZ where he began a successful career with National Life of Vermont in 1961.

He loved his family and friends dearly and shared his zeal for life, good music, golf, astronomy, Shakespeare, camping and travel with his family and friends. He was truly a renaissance man and inspired us with his quest for knowledge and his loving and sweet, light-hearted ways.

He is survived by his wonderful wife, Carolyn, who he adored; stepchildren, David (Virg) Diebold and Karen (Chip) Fouquet; granddaughters, Erika and Laura Diebold; niece, Dolly Poston Zollars and many extended family and friends.

Memorial Service will be on Sunday, November 15, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. EVERGREEN MORTUARY.

A LITTLE INDIANA BRICK HISTORY -
An interesting history is connected with the brick industry in Attica Ind which is today represented by a plant of the Poston Brick Co established in 1907 CE Poston of Crawfordsville It is not known in year the first brick were made in Attica but the first house in Fountain County was built from the brick on the site of the chautauqua pavilion In Daniel Young made brick on his farm south of the and used the material for the large residence now on property Between 1865 and 1868 John Bell a capable honest business man established a pretentious brick near Elmdale and a few years later erected a plant of the town Mr Bell was also a contractor and buildings erected by him are in a good state of today indicating the excellence of the material which the brick were made The Poston Brick Co was the next and latest development of the industry in Attica The plant operated for several years on a basis of three fourths paving brick and one face brick but paving brick has been discontinued at present the plant turns out about 50,000 face brick The well known Poston Orientals were the first surfaced brick to be made and were originated by Poston whose two sons Floyd and Irvin are associated him in the business Poston brick are shipped to the coast down to Texas up to Minnesota and Canada Milwaukee and Indianapolis are also large markets - Windsor and Kenfield Publishing Company, 1922 - Brick trade

The W. Irvin Poston "Irv" and his bride, Martha Barnhill Poston, moved to Attica in 1921 from Crawfordsville, where he began to establish the Poston-Herron Brick Company, with his brother-in-law , the husband of Florence Poston Herron... pg. 174 Presbyterian Pioneers By Carol Parks Morrison
Florence Herron, 88, died Tuesday in San Jose, California where she had made her home for many years. Mrs. Herron was a member of the Christian Science Church. She moved to California after retiring.

She was a daughter of Clarence Poston, who owned and operated one of the first brick plants here.

She married Austin Herron who also ran a brick plant here and at Attica. He is deceased.

Surviving are two children Patricia and David both of San Jose, an two grandchildren.

Her remains were cremated in California - Crawfordsville Journal Review 26 Oct 1979


In the early history of Attica,
.... In 1907, a modern brick plant was contructed outside the city limits northeast of Attica where there was an abundant outcropping of fiine shale

Clarence Poston, the builder of the plant came frm an Ohio family interested in brick building. The factory building and two kilns were built from brick made at Veerdersburg. The remaining 12 kilns were constructed of brick made at the plant in the original two kilns.

The plant produced face brick, floor brick and paving brick. Forty worker were employed and they produced around ten million bricks annually...

Prudue University proved to be very desirable market for the Poston Bricks of Attica. In the years from 1927-1960 over 25 large academic buildings on the campus were faced with Poston Bricks

In Attica, on of the first streets paved with Poston Bricks was McDonald Stree. This was done in 1909 and some of that street still has those bricks.

In the year 1957, the company observed its 50th anniversary.

In 1961, the plant was sold the the Illinois Brick Company of Chicago. The new owners operated the plant until 1964 when it closed the business.

Peacock-Poston House 307 S. Brady Street Attica, Fountain county Indiana

In 1829 Job Peacock (b. 1791} of Burlington, New Jersey, and his son Joseph (b. 1814) pitched a tent in what is now Ravire Park in Attica and were among the first dozen families to settle in town. Joseph followed his father's trade in blacksmithing and was elected as the first councilman of the city's first ward, serving seven consecutive terms. According to local tradition, he built this house in 1847. Of the second generation of Peacocks to reside here, Albert S. Peacock (1853-1919) is best known. For over 30 years he was an owner and editor of the Attica Ledger; he also served as postmaster for 13 years and was active in community affairs. His spinster sisters—Jennie, proprietor of a millinery shop, and Mary, a schoolteacher—were the last family members to live here.

In 1930 the house was sold to Floyd Poston, a partner in the Poston Herron Brick Company in Attica, founded by his father Charles in 1907. It has remained with descendants of the Poston family ever since.

This house represents one of the most popular expressions of the Greek Revival style for large town homes in the Midwest. Eschewing the temple front with portico, the house nonetheless reflects the style in its classical proportions. The gable end facade facing the street emulates the temple front particularly at the roofline, where the low pitched roof and the returns of the wide entablature boards under the eaves combine to suggest a pediment. The recessed doorway exhibits the typical transom and sidelights of the style. Wide stone lintels above the six-over-six windows are now masked by paint. As originally built, the two-story brick structure extended back along Washington Street forming an L-shaped plan. Between 1910 and 1927 a one-story addition was made to the north side of this wing, filling in the rectangle.

After the Postons purchased the property in 1930, a new brick garage and connecting breezeway were built at the east end of the house.

These new additions are entirely sympathetic to the house and may have taken their archway motifs from the one-and-one-half-story stable formerly at the northeast corner of the lot.

After Floyd Poston's 1930 purchase of the old Peacock home at 307 S.
