    1961 Nov 8 - Joseph Howard To Open Medical Office Here

    Joseph D. Howard, M.D., will open an office in Culver next week at 114 N. Main St., in the former office of Dr. C. G. Mackey.

    Dr. Howard, who is originally from Hartford, Conn., received his pre-medical training at the University of Chicago where hewas a member of Phi Kappa Psi and earned his B.A. degree in 1956. He then attended Kansas University Medical School, receiving his M.D. degree in June, 1960, following which he served his internship at Ball Memorial Hospital, Muncie, Ind., from I960 to 1961.

    Dr. Howard was engaged in private practise in general medicine at Hamilton, Ind., prior to coming to Culver.

    He is married to the former Marilyn K. Miller of Logansport who is a graduate of the Michael Reese Hospital School of Nursing at Chicago. Mrs. Howard is a member of the Logansport chapter of Kappa Kappa Kappa sorority.

    The Howards have a four-year old son, Daniel, and they are residing at the Fred Hizer cottage at 760 West Shore Drive, Culver . They are members of St. Mary's of the Lake Church.


Dr. Joseph Howard May 30, 1934 — June 14, 2023

    Joseph Daniel Howard, MD, passed away at age 89 on June 14, 2023, in Pensacola, FL. He was born May 30, 1934, in Hartford Connecticut. He won a sports scholarship to Yale University as a starting freshman on the Yale football team. He was injured the preceding summer and could not play football, but won an academic scholarship at University of Chicago. While there he met and married his lovely wife, Marilyn, in 1954. She was a third year nursing student at Micheal Reese Hospital in Chicago. One day he went to the playing field and, even though in a full leg cast, he threw a shot put so far that the coach invited him join the track team. Dr. Howard set records in the 1950's that lasted until the 1970's at the the University of Chicago. He obtained his Medical Degree at University of Kansas School of Medicine. Dr. Howard was a adjunct professor of medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine. He started a large multi-specialty clinic in Logansport, Indiana, in 1968. Dr. Howard moved to Gulf Breeze, Florida to accept the position as the first Director of the Family Practice Program of The Pensacola Educational Program. He left the directorship to start a private Family Practice with his wife Marilyn, a Family Nurse Practitioner. They served their local community for 41 years and retired for medical reasons in 2019. Dr. Howard was a past member of the Knights of Columbus and The Elks. Dr. Howard retired from the US Army Reserves with the rank of captain. He authored an instructional book to help patients receive optimal medical care, "The Sophisticated American Patient", which will be available soon on Amazon. Dr. Howard dedicated his life to healing and helping people live better and more healthy lives, as well as the education of patients and future physicians. He and Marilyn, worked as a team in their Family Practice for decades, bringing health to the communities they served. Dr. Howard was preceded in death by his Mother, Alice Howard, Father, Joseph John Howard, and Sister Alice Paszek. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn, daughter, Rebecca, his son, Daniel Howard, and sister Claire Greenberg. His celebration of life will follow his memorial mass 10 AM, Saturday, July 22, 2023, at Our Lady of The Assumption, at 10 AM. In lieu of flowers, he would have preferred donations to Our Lady of The Assumption, 920 Via De Luna, Gulf Breeze, FL 32561.

  • Among the first to graduate as ARNP, (Nurse Practitioner) from Indiana University Medical Center, Reginstreif Institute in 1972 and Purdue University with a B.S. and Nursing.
  • To Florida in 1978 to work for Pensacola Educational Program and be the Clinic Manager for the residency program: Dr. Howard was the Director.
  • 1980 to Gulf Breeze in practice with Joseph Howard, MD and Mary Ellen Neal, ARNP. Still working at 1354 Country Club Road hopefully until collected for the heavenly choir.
