Cancer Takes The Life of Der. Hippensteel
Dr. Russell R. Hippensteel, former Indianapolis and Hollywood, Flordia, pediatrician, died of
cancer at Parkview Hospital, Indiana on August 19, 1968
Dr. Hippensteel was born near Rochester, Indiana in 1896 the son of clarence and Eliza Coble
Hippensteel.
After taking his pre-medical education at Manchester College, he received his M.D. degree at
Indiana University in 1922, followed by an internship and pediatric residency at Indianapolis
General Hospital and a pediatric internship at Boston City Hopsital, Boston, Massachusetts.
In 1925 he became assistant superintendent of the Indianapolis General Hospital and the following
year superintendent of the Edwards hospital in Fort Lauderdale, Flordia. In 1927 he returned to
Indianapolis and entereed private practice. At first his office was located in the Hume Mansure
buliding. Later he moved to 3740 central Avenue
Dr. Hippensteel interrupted his private practice to join the staff of the Indiana University General
Base Hospital no 32 in the ETO during World War II as Lieut. Colone. The unit served overseas from
August 1943 to October 1945
After the war Dr. Hippensteel practiced in Indianapolis untill 1951, when he moved to Hollywood, Flordia,
where he continued pratice until 1961.
At the time of his death he was living at 936 South Shore Drive on lake Maxinkuckee near Culver, Indiana
He was a Diplomate of the American Board of pediatrics, a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, a
member of the American medical Association, the Indiana Medical Society, Flordia Medical Society, and the
Marshall county Medical Society.
He had formerly served on the Methodist Hospital and St. Vincent's Hospital in Indianapolis, was a charter member
of the staff of the Broward county Hospital, Hollywood, Flordia and was consulting physician at the county
hospitals in Winamac, Rochester, and Plymouth, Indiana. He also served on the advisory board for the
Marshall-Starke development Center fo the Hndicapped in Plymouth, Indiana.
Dr. Hippensteel was affiliated with Phi chi medical fraternity, Kiwani International, Masonic Lodge, was Past
Commande of the American Legion Paul Coble Post, and was a former member of the Second Presbyterian chruch in
Indianapolis
His wife, Ethel Bender Hippensteel, preceeded him in death in 1956.
In 1961 he married Faith Engle, widow of
Dr. David Engle of Tuscon, Arizona.
Besides the widow, he leaves one son Donald Morris Hippensteel of South Bend, Indiana; a step-daughter Mrs. Henry
Gurr of South carolinea; thre step grand-children and three sisters and one brother.
Private funeral services will be held at the Shirley funeral Home at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Augs 22, with Father Ross,
chaplin of the Indiana Base University Hospital No. 32 officiating
