David Hummel Swedes was born in Cincinnati, OH in 1932 to Mary Louis and Gustav Frances Swedes.

Dave had two sisters, Nancy Swedes and Mary Ann Strickland.

After growing up in Cincinnati, he attended Culver Military Academy in northern Indiana for high school. University of Cincinnati's business school prepared him for an eventual career in c onstruction.

Prior to starting his career in industry, he served a two-year assignment as a Captain and flight controller for interceptor missions at Misawa Air Force Base in Japan.

Upon returning from Japan, Dave started his career as an estimator at the David Hummel Building Company, a local masonry contracting firm started in the 1850's.

In addition to pursuing his career, he flew light aircraft partly as a hobby and business venture.

Dave had a passion for music, and he played the trumpet with numerous jazz groups locally as well his own combo.

In 1959, he met Joyce Richards, an interior design student at the University of Cincinnati, and they married in August of 1961. Dave and Joyce had their one son David Jr. in 1966.

During a long career at the company, now renamed Hummel Industries, Dave oversaw the diversification of the firm from stone and brickwork into paving and restoration and was responsible for building and maintaining some Cincinnati landmarks such as, St. Gregory's Seminary, Union Terminal and St. Peter in Chains Cathedral. Dave oversaw the strategic expansion of the firm and eventually sold it to mentors and fellow employees in 1990. During his long career, he was privileged to receive the Spirit of Construction Award, be President of the Cincinnati Rotary Club as well as head several construction associations dedicated to improving building techniques and working conditions in the industry.

Dave and his family's lives changed dramatically in 1979 when they recognized the emptiness of life without Jesus and asked Jesus to be their Lord and Savior. Subsequent years in business tested his commitment but he grew in his faith and became an encourager, Bible study leader and mentor to men and couples in his sphere of influence. Dave started Bible studies at his company, at the Rotary Club and around Cincinnati and saw the Lord draw many to Him through exposure to the Word of God. Dave also served on the boards of a local mediation service and the Crisis Pregnancy Center in Mt. Auburn.

The Lord eventually drew Dave and Joyce to the east coast of Florida where, at a local RV park, they, along with a small team, started a church that grew to 300 people. Dave's passion for encouragement and ministry to others continued as they led Bible studies in the locations where they lived during the winter months.

In 2016, Dave and Joyce moved back to Cincinnati permanently and served at Summit City Church.

Dave leaves his wife Joyce, of 63 years, their son, David Jr., his wife Carmen, and two grandsons, Tyler and Christopher Swedes.

A visitation for David will be held Saturday, November 23, 2024 at Summit City Church 7950 Pfeiffer Rd, Montgomery, OH 4 5242, beginning at 12:30 p.m. A funeral service will follow at 1:00 p.m. (edits 47158054)

MR. AND MRS. E. NEEPER RICHARDS announce the engagement of their daughter, Joyce Ann, to Mr. David H. Swedes, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gustave F. Swedes. Miss Richards was graduated from Walnut Hills High School and is now attending the University of Cincinnati College of Applied Arts. SHe is a member of Delta Delta. Delta

Mr. Swedes was graduated from Culver Military Academy and the University of Cincinnati College of Business Administration. He is a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon.
