WILLIAM G. PONADER
William G. Ponader, who was born in Bremen and lived here until he moved to South Bend after his marriage in 1912, died unexpectedly Saturday while on a shopping trip in Eau Gallie, Florida, where he had lived since 1952.

Mr. Ponader was the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Ponader and was the junior member of the mercantile firm of F. Ponader & Sons before he went to South Bend and established the Maple Lane Realty Company, which he operated until his retirement. Surviving are his widow, the former Fern Shafer of Nappanee; a son, William G., Jr., of Eau Gallie; a daughter, Mrs. Charles Smithson, of Bloomington, Ill.; two brothers, Edward of Fort Wayne and Carl of South Bend; and 2 grandchildren. BUSINESS MAN WEDS
"Billie" Ponader Married Yesterday in Detroit

William G. Ponader. the genial junior member of the firm of F. Ponader's Sons, went to Detroit Monday, where he was yesterday united in marriage with Miss Fern Shafer, now of that city but formerly of Nappanee and Bremen.

And thereby hangs a tale:
Several years ago when the party of the first part was a mere youth in football togs, Miss Shafer came to Bremen to see a game between the Germans and her townsmen. The affinity bug immediatly began to buzz in glad anticipation, and the final result of this entirely unconventional meeting was the wedding yesterday.

The ceremony was a quiet affair in the presence of only a few friends at the club rooms of the Philoxene society, a girls club at Detroit.

The couple are now on a honeymoon trip to Niagara Falls. Toronto, Thousand Islands, Montreal, New York and other points in Canada and the east.

The groom is well known in Bremen and vicinity, and the bride has many friends here also. She was for a year and a half a stenographer in the offices of the Holland Radiator Co. Her home was formerly at Nappanee, where she was a member of an old and respected family.

Mr. and Mrs. Ponader will be gone for some two weeks. when they will return to Bremen and make their home with the groom's father, Fred Ponader, in his handsome East Plymouth street home.

Fern M. Ponader, 88, of 102 Atlantic Ave., Indialantic, died Friday at Brevard Hospital, Melbourne.

Services will be at Davis Funeral Home at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Surviving are one son, W. George Jr., Indialantic; one daughter, Mrs. June Smithson, Bloomington, Ill.; two sisters, Grace Neff and Zula Fritch, both of South Bend, Ind.; twelve grandchildren and three great grandchildren. -- Florida Today, Cocoa, FL Sat, Aug 18, 1973

The funeral of Mrs. June P. Smithson, 60. of 38 Country Club Place, who died Saturday, will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Metzler Memorial Home, with the Rev. James Lee White officiating.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mrs. Smithson was born June 23, 1913, in South Bend, Ind., a daughter of William George and Maud Fern Shafer Ponader.

She was married to Charles B. Smithson Jr.

Survivors include her husband; two daughters. Mrs. Marsha Fehrenbacher, Ames. Iowa, and Mrs. Laura White, Cincinnati. Ohio: a son. Charles B. Smithson Ill. Lexington, and a brother, William G. Ponader, Melbourne, Fla.

Wilhelmina P. Hamilton, 33, of 423 North Esther street, South Bend, died Saturday, February 10, in St. Joseph hospital after an illness of four weeks.

Mrs. Hamilton was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William G. Ponader, former Bremen residents, and was born in South Bend on February 24, 1917.

She is survived by her husband; her parents; three small daughters Christine Ann, Juliette, and Martha; one sister, Mrs. C. B. Smithson, and one brother, William G. Ponader, Jr., both of South Bend.

She was a member of St. Paul's Memorial Methodist church and of St. Joseph Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star. She held the station of Martha in the chapter.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon

CANOVA BEACH — W. George Ponader Jr., 74, a retired lead mechanic for Boeing Services International, died Friday at Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne.

Mr. Ponader came to Brevard County in 1951 and lived at Canova Beach until 1984, when he moved to Silver Springs.

He worked for Northrup, Pan Am and Boeing before retiring in 1982. "He never met a stranger," said his daughter, Charlotte Posey of Floresville, Texas. "He said hi to everybody. He was a CB nut and met a lot of people through the radio. Then, when he was traveling, he would stop and visit them."

Mr. Ponader worked in residential construction in his native South Bend, Ind., and built homes for his family and his father when he first came to Brevard. He built and owned the Gaylan apartments on East Eau Gallie Causeway, where Causeway Mower is now. He also built and owned a restaurant, George's Bulldog House, from 1955 to 1957 that was a popular hangout for Melbourne High School students. Mr. Ponader loved to fish and won several trophies. He traveled to 48 states and Canada with his wife in their motorhome. He once owned an appliance store.

He enjoyed bowling and was a volunteer in the YMCA Indian guide program.

He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of American Legion Post 163 in Melbourne.

Besides Posey, survivors include his wife of 52 years, Martha Ponader of Silver Springs; son, W. George Ponader III of Indialantic; daughters, Charlynn Mahone of Indialantic and Cathleen Frazier and Candee Alexander, both of Melbourne; and grandchildren, Heather Frazier, Ryan George Alexander and Melissa Alexander, all of Melbourne.

Calling hours will be 5 to 7 p.m. today at Florida Memorial Funeral Home, north of Melbourne.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
