Marmont, Ind., Feb. 29 - Louis Duneweg of Terre Haute had been wishing that his hamdsone 2-story cottage at Lake Maxinkuckee was on the other side of the lake, and regretted the fact that the country surrounding the shore for three miles was too hill to make removal possible.

Last week when the cold snap froze the ice to a thickness of 18 inches he moved the hous down to the lake and then slid it on the ice. From there across the lake it was an easy job - The Republic, Cloumbus, Indiana

Mr. LOUIS DUENWEG, who for fifteen years has had charge of the books of the distillery now operated by Cox & Fairbanks, is a native of Germany, near Cologne, where he was born about the year 1837. At the age of nineteen years he had become a graduate and shortly after began at keeping books. In 1859 he emigrated to the United States and located at Terre Haute, where in 1864 he took charge of the books of Alex. McGregor & Co., distillers. Since that time he has had charge of the books of that institution during the different changes of proprietorship. It is now about twenty-three years since he first began at bookkeeping. During that time he has probably at one time done a greater amount of work than any other bookkeeper of Terre Haute. Louis DUENWEG Highly influential and honored for his broad participation in the financial industrial and commercial progress of Terre Haute Louis Duenweg has for almost half a century been a notable figure in the substantial development of his city and state He is a strong and able representative of Germany his fatherland and America his adopted country and the land to which he has donated his best energies of body and mind since the earlier years of his mature life He is a native of that country born near the city of Cologne on the 9th of October 1837 his education in the fatherland including not only a scholastic but a commercial training In 1856 he became a bookkeeper in the great iron works of Ruhrort known as Phoenix II but three years later came to the United States with the determination to become an independent factor in Terre Haute the city of his location.

Mr Duenweg is therefore within a year of having attained the golden anniversary of his settlement in this city The first few months therein were spent in search of employment and in 1860 he commenced to learn the printer's trade with the German newspaper then in existence Finally he reached the position of foreman but six months in this capacity determined him to enter the field of business He was a fine accountant and within the succeeding three years was bookkeeper for the packing company of Farrington & Williams H D Williams wholesale grocer and the distillery of Alexander McGregor & Company He served the last named from 1864 to 1869 when H H ulman purchased the distillery and Mr Duenweg not only continued in his old position but later on bought a small interest in the business He thus continued with H ulman & Fairbanks and Cox & Fairbanks, successive proprietors of the business, and when Mr. Cox retired from the firm he became joint owner of the same, his partner being Crawford Fairbanks. These two gentlemen finally organized the Terre Huate Distillery COmpany, and in 1887 Mr. Duenweg retired from the business, leaving Mr. Fairbanks as sole proprietor.

Since the time of his retirement from the Terre Haute Distilling Company twenty years ago Mr Duenweg has been identified with many important enterprises all highly successful For a number of years he was extensively interested in lead and zinc mines of the Joplin district Missouri and has developed several very productive properties During this period he was president of the Center Valley Lead and Zinc Company and secretary of the Duenweg Mining Company The little city of Duenweg Missouri a place of 2,500 pop ulation founded largely upon the industries of this and other mines was named in honor of this sturdy Terre Haute citizen For a number of years Mr Duenweg was also president of the Vigo Clay Company and has long been connected with the Central Manufacturing Company of this city successively as secretary president and director At the present time he is president of the Union Savings Association president of the Star Exploring and Mining Company vice president of the Terre Haute Abattoir and Stock Yards Company and vice president of the People's Brewing Company

How Duenweg, Misouri Got Its Name

Otto Duenweg and his father, Louis, of Terre Haute, Indiana, had been interested in the mining district since 1894. Their first investments in Missouri were made by Louis Duenweg, in Aurora. In that same year both Louis and Otto were associated in the opening of The Silver Dick mine in Center Valley, north of Webb City. A year later, in 1895, a new camp southeast of Webb City, where G. P. Ashcraft and J. Allen Hardy had been opening up some great lead diggings, attracted the attention of the Indiana capitalists. The Duenwegs purchased some of the largest of the newly discovered mines. The mining camp became known from that time on as "Duenweg", in honor of the men who had undertaken the development of this new territory.

Otto Duenweg was only 25 years old when the town was given his last name. He died just 13 years later, August 14, 1908, in Manitou Springs, Colorado, after undergoing emergency surgery. Beatrice L. Duenweg, 76, of Terre Haute died at 1:45 p.m. Thursday, July 27, 1989 in Union Hospital. She was a retired Gerstmeyer High School teacher and had worked at Terre Haute North High School.

She was born January 22, 1913, in Terre Haute to Louis Duenweg and Marie Koons Duenweg.

Survivors include two brothers, Otto E. Duenweg of Napoleon, Ohio, and Louis Duenweg of Detroit, Michigan; and cousins.

She was a member of the Vigo County Teachers Association.

Services were in the Patrick J. Ryan Funeral Home. Burial was at Highland Lawn Cemetery in Terre Haute.
