PLYMOUTH - Charles H. Schafer, formerly of Plymouth, age 90, passed away at 12:30 p.m., on
Friday, Jan. 23, 2015, at he Signature Healthcare, in Bremen.
Charles was born on Oct. 14, 1924, in Oak Park, Ill., to Earl W. and Annette M. (Fisher) Schafer.
Charles married the former Sarah "Sally" Buswell in January of 1948, in Jeffersonville.
He was a self-employed boilermaker, making and fixing boilers, by trade.
He belonged to the Heston Train Museum in LaPorte. Charlie was a huge Civil War Buff, enjoying many
Civil War re-enactments in places like Friendship, Indiana.
Charles was the co-owner, with Bob Listenberger, of a hot air balloon, they named "October".
Charlie proudly served his country in the United States Army, during World War II.
Charles is survived by his son, Robert and Valerie Schafer of Plymouth; his grandchildren, Eleesha J.
Schafer, Lee R. (Jenna) chafer, Sarah A. Schafer, and Sam C. (Echo) Schafer; and nine
great-grandchildren.
Charles was preceded in passing by his parents, Earl W and Annette M. (Fisher) Schafer; his wife,
Sarah B. "Sally" Schafer; and their two sons, Charles H. "Chuck" Schafer and Earl W. "Bud" Schafer.

Sarah B. “Sally” Schafer, of Castle Drive, Plymouth, died, following an illness, at her
residence where she had lived for the past 14 years, at 2:05 a.m. on Tuesday, December 1,
2009. Sally was 79 years-old..
Born in Culver , IN., on August 13, 1930, she was the daughter of Samuel and Lilly (Seese)
Buswell and attended Culver schools..
In January of 1948, Sally and Charles H. Schafer were married in Jeffersonville, IN. They enjoyed
traveling together and winters in the Florida Keys.
For several years they owned and operated the Down to Earth woodstove store in Plymouth and were
the proprietors of the Long Pointe Bed & Breakfast on Lake Maxinkuckee..
Sally was a homemaker. She loved to cook and try new recipes. She enjoyed word searches, reading
romance novels and growing flowers. She appreciated nature and everything in it, particularly birds
and encouraged the humane treatment of all animals.
One of the highlights of her life was a trip to Europe in June of 2000, given as a graduation gift
to her family.
She appreciated music and had played the flute.
A member of Mothers Against Drunk Driving, she was also an avid Humane Society supporter.
Sally is survived by Charles, her spouse of almost 62 years and by their son; Robert and spouse
Valerie Schafer of Plymouth, four grandchildren; Lee R. Schafer, Sarah A. Schafer, Eleesha J.
Schafer all of Plymouth and Samuel C. and spouse Echo M. Schafer of Bourbon. Five great grandchildren
also survive.
A sister, Mary Lou Loftus, VA., and a brother, John (Anne) Buswell, Indianapolis, IN., survive as
well.
ally was preceded in death by two sons; Charles H. Schafer and Earl “Bud” W. Schafer and a brother;
Jack Buswell.
Friends are invited to share their memories and visit with Sally’s family from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday,
December 4, 2009, at the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth.
Funeral services for Sally will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 5, 2009, in the funeral home
with the Rev. Chuck Krieg officiating..
Burial will be in the Culver Masonic Cemetery.

Charles Henry SCHAFER, 18, Sault Saint Marie, Ontario, Canada, formerly of near Argos, died
in a head-on automobile-truck collision at 11 p.m. Wednesday. One other passenger in the
car was killed and another is in serious condition in a hospital.
Mr. Schafer was born Oct. 17, 1948 at Plymouth to Charles and Sarah BUSWELL SCHAFER, who reside
at R.R. 4, Plymouth. He had been employed in Canada for the past year.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by two brothers, Earl [SCHAFER], a student at Rosenberg
college, Switzerland, and Robert [SCHAFER], at home; the paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs.

near Argos, who was killed in an automobile-truck collision in Canada Wednesday night, will be at
3:30 p.m. Sunday at the Grossman funeral home, Argos.
The Rev. Harold W. HOBMAN [Hohman] and the Rev. Ernest TREBER will officiate. Burial will be at the
Masonic cemetery, Culver .

Samuel Herbert Buswell and Lillie Mae Seese were married in September, 1923 in Culver . On that same
day in September there was another marriage. Both couples had the same friends. In those days the
friends played tricks on newlyweds. They kidnapped Lillie Mae and the from from the other wedding and
locked them in jail together for two or three hours.
They finally let them out to join their respective parties before the receptions ended. From that
marriage came Jack Edward, Mary Louise, John Allen and Sarah Frances Buswell.
Samuel died in 1942. Lillie Mae is now 84 years old and lives in Flordia
Charles parents, Earl W. Schaffer and Annette Mae Fisher, met in Logansport and were married in
September 1912. They had one son Charles Henry born in 1924. Earl and Annette died several years
ago.
Charles and Sarah Buswell were married on January 10, 1948. They were supposed to be going to a
basketball tourney and instead they eloped. They were married in a marriage chapel by a justice of
the peace in Jeffersonville. Sarah was 17 years old and still in high school. Charles was 23 years
old and already out of the service. Sarah "Sally" lived at home while she finished school in Culver .
Charles lived with his parents during that time. They kept the marriage a secret until their son,
Charles Jr., gave it away.
Charles Jr. was born October 17, 1948. Then Charles and Sally built a home south of Plymouth. Their
second son, Earl, was born December 20, 1949. Their thrid son, Robert E. Lee Shafer [Schafer], arrived
on May 19, 1956.
Charles Jr. died in an automobile accident on October 4, 1967.
Earl spent several years in Switzerland where he finished high school at St. Gallen. He then went on
to Leysin, Switzerland, and was graduated from the American College of Switzerland.
Earl "Bud" married Joyce Berkeypile of Plymouth in June 1979. They have two children, Sarah Annette and
Samuel Charles.
Robert followed his fathers footsteps and is a certified welder, machinist and steel fabricator. He
married Valarie Laffoon (also from Plymouth) in October 1980. They have two children, Eleesha Jean and
Lee Robert - Sally Schafer.
