State Road 10 Index
1920, November 17 the State Highway Commission announced plans for a
new East to West highway - State Road 50
[10] from Warsaw, Kosciusko County,(East) to Demotte, Jasper County (West).
1922 - May 24 - Bass Lake Road Temporarily Bridged Through Co-operation of Business Men and Farmers
After two or three weeks of interrupted travel on the Bass lake road near the Medbourn and Ogden farms
by the opening of the dredge ditch across the highway, a temporary bridge was thrown over thet ditch
last Sunday.
The work was done by a combination of the farmers of the neighborhood and the business men of Culver.
Both material and labor were volunteered, but it is probable that the bill will be paid by the State
Highway commission.
The bridge is 12 feet wide and 45 feet long.
Last March the State Highway ci re mission was served with-notice that the ditch contractors were desirous
of crossing the highway and that permission was desired.
No rply has ever been received to this request, it is said, and when the contractors reached the highway
they proceeded to cross it. Technically, they are perhaps in the wrong, yet the commission was in duty bound
to make a reasonably prompt reply to the request.
However, rather than subject the people of that territory to further inconvenience the busiess men, of Culver
were willing to assume the responsibility of the cost and to order the work of bridging the highway to proceed.
1926 - Feb 24 Extension of Road No. 50 Planned
Representatives of Towns Effected Met in Warsaw.
LOCAL MEN ATTEND
Will Use Every Influence to get State Commission to Improve Road No. 50.
Organized effort has been begun to secure the extension of State Road Number 50 in both directions. A meeting of
representatives from the various towns along this route was held in Warsaw Monday and it was the decision of all
present to make a mighty effort to get this done.
The extension as proposed would be, on the east, from Argos to Warsaw and, on the west, from Demotte to the
Indiana-Illinois state line where the road would connect to the Illinois State Road Number 114.
It was felt that this would give users of State Road 50 an outlet at both ends, inasmuch as it would connect with
State Roads 2 and 27 at Warsaw.
The representatives of the city of Warsaw were heartily in favor 0f such a proposition and have not only endorsed
the proposition but have guaranteed their earnest support. The meeting was held in the Hotei Hays at Warsaw at one
o'clock in the afternoon. Representatives were there from North Judson, Culver, Argos and Warsaw.
Those who attended from Culver were
M. H. Ewald,
J. P. Walter,
Claude May,
C. C. Longfellow,
F. G. Solomon and
C. W. Newman.
After the thorough discussion of the one particular item of business, it was decided to effect a permanent
organization to be known as "State Road 50 Association." Nominations and votes revealed the following selection for
officers:
president, P. H. McCormick, of North Judson;
vice president, C. C. Longfellow of Culver; and
secretary, E. A. Gast, of Warsaw.
Directors are as follows:
George Polk of Warsaw,
J. P. Walter, of Culver,
John Wickizer, of Argos, and
C. M. Pohlman, of North Judson.
At a future meeting, directors will be selected from Bass Lake and Demotte.
The purpose of the organization is to use every possible influence with the State Highway Commission to have the
east and west road improved at an early date. If the unimproved gaps are closed, it will provide a concrete road
from eastern Indiana to the Illinois state line touching Winona Lake, Lake Maxinkuckee and Bass Lake, three of the
great lake resorts of Northern Indiana. - Culver Citizen

commission against L. R. Easterday, L. C. Dillion and W. N. Houghton.
