George Rollins Dead
End Came to respected Colored Man Late Friday

George Rollins, age, 68, much respected colored man of Culver, died at his home last Thursday, August 6th after quite a long illness, funeral services were held in the Rollins Chapel last Sunday and interment was made in the Culver cemetery.

Mr. Rollins came to Culver in 1899 from Missouri and was in the employment of the Culver Military Academy from many years as a cook. All of this community have had nothing by but words for George, He was a man of his word, believed in the right things and acted out his beliefs.

The Rollins chapel is a lasting memorial to his life. He was the need of a church in Culver for the people of his race. He therefore donated the ground on which the edifice which still stands, was built, and he has been a hard worker in this congregation.

He leaves to mourn his death a widow and two children, Dr. H. T. Rollins of Detroit, Mich. and Mrs. C. L. Watts of Culver. An Obituary appears elsewhere in this paper. -

    Obituary

George Rollins Was born in the State of Missouri in the year of 1857 and passed to his eternal reward Aug. 6, 1925 at the age of 68 yeara.

On the 13th of November 1887, he was united in Holy Matrimony to Nettie Easley. To this union six children were born. Four having preceded him in death.

The first 41 years of his life was spent in his native state, b ut in the year 1899 he and his family moved to Culver, Ind., where he was connected with the Culver Military Academy for 10 years.

Immediately upon his arrival in Culver he united with the Methodist church and for 14 years was an acive worker and generous supporter of all it activities.

Twelve years ago he donated the gorund on which it now stands "The Rollin Chapel", a lasting memorial to him and to his earnest belief in God. In a wold torn by religiousd doubts and questions George Rollins has believed simply and trusted wholly in God.

His religion and his christianity consisted not in words but iin good deed, and all of us from the oldest to the children have known his kindness and he help and sympathy.

He leaves to mourn his loss a widow and two children. Dr H. T Rollins of Detriot, Mich. and Mrs. C. L. Watts of Culver. FIve grandchildren and a host of firends.

The town of Culver will always be a better place in which to live because of his life and influnece.

"Earth to earth and dust to dust"
Calmy now the words we say
Left behind, we ait in trust
      For the resurrection day.
      Father, in thy gracious keeping
Leave we now Thy servant sleeping.

      A Terrrible Tragedy
Mrs. Clara Rollins Artis, a Former Culver Girl Burned to Death at South Bend

Just as Joseph Artis, the colored musician of South Bend, was preparing to sound the signal for the grand march at the dance in the Osborn Hotel Saturday night he received a telephone call announcing that his wife had been seriously burned byb the explosion of a kerosene can and that his precence was needed at once.

As there are no trains out of Culver at night for South Bend, and the roads were impassable for that distance, he found himself helpless to respond. With a self-control that is rare, he determined no to interfere with the pleasure of the party and proceed with the music for the dance, keeping his post until the program was concluded.

Meanwhile Mrs Artis and a younder brother of Mr. Artis, who was in the room at the time of the expolsioon, but was less severely burned, were taken to a hospital where Mrs. Artis died early the following monring.

The explosion alarmed the people in the Rushton flats adjoining th Artis home, and Edward Bond local manager of the Bell Telephone company, who was in the dining room, rushed to the house, through the blinding smoke, and wrapping a blanket around Mrs. Artis carried her out of doors.

Mrs Artis was Clara Rollins, a Culver girl until her marriage abouut a year ago, a graduate of the Culver high school and later in Wilberforce university.

She was a young woman of fine musical talents, educated and refined. Her pleasing manners made her a afavorite with her teachers and school mates, and in her case, as well as in that of her brother Hollis, also a graduate of the high school and now attending Wilberforce, the color line was ingnored in her school life.

Mrs. Artis leaves an infant. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs George Rolins, two sisters - Mrs. Charles Wade and Florence - a young brother, resides in this place. To these relatives, the absent brother and the stricken husband, profound sympathy will be extended.

The body of Mrs. Artis was brought to Culver at 11:30 Tuesday morning, accompanied by relatives of both families and Rev. Mr. Taylor.

Friends of the deceased officiated as pall bearers.

The service was held at the M. E. church at 2 o'clock, many of our people attending.

Rev. Mr. Wright conducted the service, assisted by Re. Mr. Taylor. The Methodist choir sang the music. The casket was covered with beautiful flowers including pieces fromt he Culver high school class of 1906, L'Allegro club and the head waiter and waiters at the academy.

Later new from young Ray Artis is that he is more seriously burned than was at first announced, and his recovery is very doubtful - 16 Dec 1909, Thu Citizen Page 1
