He was on the 1922 CHS basketball team was the first integrated high school basketball team in Indiana., with Charles Wade Jr.

Palmer D. Whitted Sr. - Vallejo - Services were held today for Palmer D. Whitted Sr., founder of an Oakland mortuary and retired vice principal of Berkley High School

. Born in Indiana, he grew up in Illinois and in 1932 began his teaching career as a football, basketball and track coach in a Texas school, which he left in 1944 to direct USO programs in New Orleans and San Francisco.



Moving his family to Oakland Whitted established a funeral service bearing his name.

He returned to teaching in 1956 at Berkeley High, from which he retired in 1972. Surviviors include a son Palmer Jr. and a daughter ALyce



Services are at the Palmer D. Whitted & Co. Mortuary, 5500 Foothill Blvd. Oakland.

Palmer Whitted is Doing Well in College

Friends and classmates in Culver of Palmer Whitted have been wondering how he is coming along in his college career at Howard University, Washington D.C. Information concerning him has been obtained showing that he is participating in football, and has played with his college team in one game at Petersburg, Virgina, where he starred. A clipping from his college paper gave him quite a write-up, but it is impossible to reprduce this clipping as it had been sent on to another relative. Palmer will paly in the Thanksgiving game with his team against Lincoln Universeity at the great American League Ball field in Washington D.C.

Palmer Whitted is Head Coach at Quinn College

Palmer Whitted has left for Waco, Texas, to take up his duties as head coach at Quinn College where he will also teach biology and physical education.

Whitted who was graduated from Culver High School in 1924 and received his degree from the University of West Virginia, is well qualified for his new position as he was a basketball stae in high school and college, the mainstay of his college team in football, and had considerable experience in track.

City Manager OK'S Mortuary Application

Application of Palmer D. Whitted to establish a mortuary at 1131 Adeline Street has been approved by City Manager John F. Hassler against the recommendation of the City Planning Commission.

Whitted, who lives at 885 36th Street, sought permission to convert a dwelling into a mortuary and a hearing was conducted by the commission, with petitions signed by 81 residents in opposition being presented.

The commission denied the application on the basis there was insufficient room on the premises to form a funeral procession as required by city ordinance.

In its report to the City Manager the commission said it recommended denial "because of the inadequate space for the makeup of funeral processions and the provisions of off-street parking. Both Adeline and 12th Street carry relatively heavy traffic said any makeup or parking on thes streets would interfere with traffic movement."

Property owners objecting to the establishment complained "that "there are many accidents at this corner and granting of the application would materially increase the pedestrian and automobile hazard." - Oakland Tribune Oakland, California Mar 04, 1948

Palmer D. Whitted Sr., Berkeley High School assistant coach and teacher since 1956, today joined the Oakland Raiders as a personnel assistant in the field, serving the team in public relations, publicity, liason activties and to help in contacting and hiring players

Soda also added that the Raiders are the first team in the American Football League and among the area's professional sports organizations to hire a Negro in an administrative position.

Whitted who helped Fred Moffet coach the Berkley High football teams and also was JV baseball coach was the first Negro teacher hired at BHS.

Remains as Teacher

However, Whitted plans to remain as a teacher. Most of his dutiess with the Raiders will be administered during the evenings and weekends.

A native of Indiana, WHitted has served as a USO director in New Orleans (1944-1845), and San Francisco (1945-1948) where he later became a YMCA Secretary.

All-Around College Athlete

The new Raider representative halds a B.S. degree in Education from West Virginia State College and an M.A. degree in Secondary School Administration from University of Michigan. At both schools he participated in football, basketball, baseball and track, winninig letters in all four sports.

Married to the former Myrtle Sengal, the Whitteds have two children, a son Palmer Jr., 26 and a married daughter Mrs. Alice Taylor.
