1907 - Apr. 18 - SUNDAY SHAVING.
A New Law Prohibits Barbers from Plying Trade on Sunday.
In the wisdom of the Indiana legislature, prodded into activity by the barbers' union, it has been decided
that no more public shaving of faces and cutting hair -- nor even the innocuous shampoo - may | be performed
in this state on the "first day of the week commonly called Sunday."
Wherefore has it gone into effect that not even in Culver are the hospitable doors of Poor and Murray to be
open on that day for the reception of such trade and commerce as has heretofore kept ye barber away from his'
morning devotions.
The law went into effect last week, and certain forgetful or uninformed persons wended their way as usual to the
tonsorial temple where not only the cleanliness that is next to godliness is dispensed to the uplifting of a
man's self-respect, but the gossip of the week is rehearsed for the edification of his spiritual and intellectual
nature.
Our local barbers are pleased with the new regime, whatever may be the opinion of the public. They say that it will
result in later hours on Saturday night, but the freedom of a whole day of rest and liberty on Sunday is more than
an offset to them, and that their business will not be apt to suffer appreciably.
How the men who may be compelled to wait until midnight before their "next" comes will regard the matter remains to
be seen. I is quite possible that the hardware store may enjoy a small-sized boom in razors and strops from men who
can shave themselves if they must but prefer to go to a barber when they can, but who failing to get in on Saturday
night regard a face looking like a pirate's as a worse evil to carry over into the following week than an occasional
drawing of blood.
