    John Beck, Well Known As a Cottager
    Passes Away John Beck, aged 76 years, died Thursday, September 26, in South Bend from kidney trouble and complications. He had been sick for about five months,

    He was well known here as he had a cottage at the south end of Lake Maxinkuckee and was here hunting as well during the winter. He had been a cottager for 16 years.

    Funeral services were held Monday at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Leonard Lang, 129 St. Louis street, South Bend. - - Culver Citizen Oct 2, 1929


    JOHN W. BECK, 75, ICE DEALER, DIES

    Had Been Ill Nine Weeks;

    Was Born in South Bend. John W. Beck, age 75, Jong Identified with the ice business in Sotuh Bend and well known among the older residents of the city, died at 12:45 o'clock this morning in his home, 129. North St. Louts boulevard. He he had been ill for about nine weeks.

    Mr. Beck was born in this city Jan. 13, 1854, the son of Mr. and Mrs. George Beck. He first entered the ice business with his father, the firm, which was known as George Beck & Son, being established in the late seventies or early eighties.

    Later he formed a partnership with Liston Webster and torether they operated the Beck & Webster Ice Company about 30 years ago. At that time Mr. Beck became associated with the City Ice company which later was bought out by, the Cooperative Ice & Fuel concern. At the time of his retirement, about 18 years ago, Mr. Beck was associated with James Ray, in the Beck & Ray company, which continued in existence until a few years ago.

    In addition to his business connections, he was a member of two fraternal orders, the Woodmen of the World, and the Turn Verein.

    Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Julius Christman, Dixie Highway North; and Mrs. Leonard Lang, of South Bend; four sisters, Mrs. Minnie Voedisch, Mrs. John Kleindinst, and Mrs. Louise Sanders of South Bend, and Mrs. H. O. Weaver of San Diego, Calif.; and a brother, George Beck of Detroit, Mich.

    His wife, whom he married as Miss Barbara Sack in 1874, preceded him in death. - - South Bend Tribun Sep 27, 1929
