Biography
John w. Gerrard, one of the substantial citizens and enterprising young farmers of Clay Township,
was born in Marshall County, IN, Jan 18, 1854. He was the eldest son born to Andrew R. and
Susannah (Miller) Gerrard. The former was a native of Switzerland County, IN, born, of French
descent, 11/12/1825; moved with his parents to Marshall County, IN. Susanna was a native of
Pennsylvania, born of Dutch descent, 2/10/1823, immigrated with her parents to Marshall County,
IN, being among the first settlers of that county. Here she was married to Andrew R. Gerrard, in
1844. She died in Marshall county on March 10, 1863.
John W. spent his boyhood and youth working upon his father's farm and attending the district
schools. After leaving the common schools, he attended high school in Bourbon two terms. In
December of 1881, he located upon a farm of his own in his native county. In September, 1883,
he removed to Cass County on the Eel River Stock Farm, in Clay Township.
Nora Condon, a native of Kendallville, Noble County, IN, born of Irish descent, December 15, 1854,
became his wife December 27, 1877. She was the daughter of Dennis and Catharine (Anglin) Condon,
both natives of Ireland. Dennis resided in Muncie, IN.
Nora and John had two sons: Charles A., born October 11, 1878, died October 13, 1878, and John C.,
born January 15, 1885. They later had a son Sam.
When John Gerrard located upon the stock farm, he formed a partnership with his brother-in-law, John
Condon, the name of the firm being Condon & Gerrard. They were breeders and dealers in Durham and
Jersey cattle, Poland-China hogs, etc. They had a fine lot of stock, which, perhaps, could not be
surpassed in Cass County. The farm consisted of 200 acres of excellent land, upon which a splendid
brick residence was erected at a cost of $4,000. Mr. Gerrard was an energetic, successful farmer
and breeder, and the firm of Condon and Gerrard enjoyed the credit of owning the finest stock farm in
Cass County.
