1939-1940 Basketball Profiles
We Have With Us Today - - -
 |
1938 - Another senior on Coach Underwood's Indians is Charles
Dickerson Jr. He ranks as one fo the best ball handlers on the
club, and his speed adds much to the team's offensive when
Junior is in the game. He also is an above average shot, but
his size keeps him from becoming a permanent fixture in
the line up. He has been a member of the Hi-Y for four years
and the boys glee club for a like period. He won letters in
basetballl and track. He was treasurer of his freshman class and
served a secretary of the Junior Hi-Y. He was born in Culver |
1940 - Ed us another of the numerous sophomores on the
high school basketball squad who give promise of furnishing Culver with
high class teams for a couple fo years. Ed has developed rapidly this
year until he has become one of the outstanding players on Coach
Underwood's quintet. Besides doing stellar work under the baskets, he
has developed a good eye for the basket, thereby accounting for several
Indian victories this season. He did not win a basketball letter last year,
but has letters in track and baseball. He was born in Culver |

1940 - Maybe readers will wonder when the supply of promising sophomore
high school players will be exhausted but the end is not yet and we have
another one with us today. He is Martin Mahler, who has been gaining
experience this year on the second team, but is about ready for varsity
service. He has a good eye for the basket, and manages to get open
for his share of shots. Defense has been his weakness so far, but he
has shown improvement in this department this season and as soon
as he learns to keep ahead of his man he will see plenty of action with
the first team during the next two seasons. He has been a member of
the Hi-Y for two years and has one of year of track to his credit. He
was born in Green Township. |
1939 - Paul Kaley is another senior member of the high school
basketball team and has one varsity letter to his credit. He has also
participated in baseball and track, winning one letter each. For four years
he has been a member of the Hi-Y, two years in the boy's glee club, and
was in the cast of an operetta. In his freshman year he was class treasurer
and vice-president of the Junior Hi-Y and this year is secretary of the Hi-Y.
Culver gets credit as Paul's birthplace. While not a brilliant preformer, Paul
has been one of the steady players of this year's basketball squad and in
recent year games has shown as improvement. If he continues this
developement he should annex many an honor on the hardwood court
before the season draws a close to his career as a high school athlete. |

1939 - Peter Pedersen, generally known at Pete, is one of the seniors on
the high school basketball team, having won two varsity letters so far in
baseball and track. But athletics do not take all his time. He has been a member of
the Hi-Y and glee club for four years, in operettas twice, and in junior and
senior plays. He has been president of the Junior Hi-Y, president of freshman
class, president of sophomore class, vice-president of Hi-Y, and is Hi-Y president
this year. Another activity of Pete's is the Boy Scouts, in which he is doing
a great job as first assistant to Scoutmaster Scruggs. He has shown ability in
the scouts as a leader and should stand him in good stead in later years.
He was born in Norway. |
1940 -Here is the last of the sophomores on Coach Paul Underwood's
high school basketball squad and so the last of this series of having players
with is today. Robert May has been playing on the second team this year for
additional experience but don't be surprised to see him on the starting five before next
season's schedule is completed. He is one of the fastest men on the squad and
seldom lets his man get away for a set-up shot. He has a good eye for the basket,
and has surprising spring in his legs, which allows him to come away with the ball
off the backboard and out jump much taller opponents. He has been a member of
the Hi-Y for two years, and is vice-president of the Sophomore class. He was born
in Culver. |

 |
1940 - Tommy is one of the several sophomore members if the Culver High
School Basketball squad, but his ability crowded him into the varsity line up
last Year, giving him a letter as a freshmen; a rather rare occurrence. He
has also won letter baseball and track, is a member of the Hi-Y, is president of the sophomore
class, was vice-president of his freshman class and student council representative
last year. Tommy is one of the outstanding members of the Boy Scout troop and is working
to become an Eagle Scout, one of the highest honors to be accorded by that
organization.
He was born in Culver. So far this season Tommy has not shown the basketball
talent he did last year, but there is every reason to believe that before the
season ends he will find himself and lead the team to a successful conclusion. His able
floor work and handling of the ball makes him a leader in most of the offensive
drive of the Indians |
1940 - Vern Weiger is in a class by himself - he is the only junior on
the high school basketball team. He won a letter last year and has been
one of the regulars this season. His outstanding ability is in getting the ball
off the backboard at both ends of the floor. Although he is not very tall, he
out-jumps most of this opponents and as a result is
used much of the time in the center position. Vern is noted for his ability
to take hard knocks many of his contacts with the hardwood being of a
degree that would render many a player
unconscious or result in a severe injury. Vern has won letter also in baseball
and track. He was born in Culver. |
