1968 - april 28 - Charles Bernhardt Named Principal Of Culver Schools
Charles W. Bernhardt, assistant principal of Plymouth High School, has been appointed principal
of Culver High School, Woodie McGlothin, president of the board of trustees, Culver Community
Schools Corporation, announced today.
The newly named high school principal will succeed Kenneth Cole, who resigned recently to accept
the superintendency of the Eastern DeKalb School Corporation
Former principal of Richland Center High School, Fulton County, Mr. Bernhardt received both
his bachelor of science and master's degrees at Ball State Teacher's University. Following college
he began teaching at Aubbeenaubbee High School, where he had received his secondary schooling.
With majors in industrial arts and social studies, he taught at Richland Center and Plymouth before
becoming principal at Richland Center in 1963. He returned to Plymouth this past year as assistant
principal.
A native of California, Mr. Bernhardt, served in the U.S. Navy. He and Mrs. Bernhardt and two children
reside at 2548 East Shore Lane, Culver
Dr. Charles Bernhardt of Culver passed away Friday, Nov. 14 at Life Care Center in Rochester IN.
Dr. Bernhardt was born on January 27, 1926 in Anaheim, California, the son of Frank Yeager Bernhardt and
Leona Sims Bernhardt.
He graduated from Leiters Ford HS and served in the U.S. Navy during WW2, on the YNG 28. Dr. Bernhardt
attended Ball State University, and was awarded his doctorate in 1969. Dr. Bernhardt was a teacher and
principal for schools in the area, including Culver, Plymouth, and Kewanna schools. Charlie was active in
several area organizations, Culver Eagles, Plymouth Moose, Toastmasters Int., Monterey American Legion,
and was a Life Member of the Culver VFW Post 6919.
Dr. Bernhardt is survived by his wife of 62 years, Donna Hosimer Bernhardt, his son Doug Bernhardt,
daughter Deb Bernhardt (husband Michael Leath), three grandchildren, Isaac (wife Anna), Eliot and Hannah,
Leath, and one great-granddaughter, Zoey Leath. He was preceded in death by his sister Bernice Kerr, and
brother Leon Bernhardt.
There will be a time of visitation with the family on Wednesday, November 19, 2014 from 2:00 - 3:00 PM EDT
at the Odom Funeral Home in Culver. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 PM.
Memorials may be given to the Finney-Shilling VFW Post 6919 of Culver.
