William F. Mills II  



May 28, 1935 - Oct. 16, 2012 CULVER - William F Mills II, 77, of Culver, passed away on October 16, 2012, at his daughter's home.

Longtime Culver educator, Bill Mills served as Elementary, Jr. High principal and superintendent from 1971 to 1995. He loved the school and enjoyed the students, staff and parents. He loved his job. Bill was always very visible to the community and the people.

He had a large family of seven children.

He was born in Hamilton, Ohio, the son of William F. and Mildred Major (McQueen) Mills.

He became a baptized Christian at the age of 12. His grandparents, Truman and Golda (Orem) Major, owned a meat market and grocery store in Oxford, Ohio, and Brookville, Indiana.

Bill served in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Army and received an honorable discharge from both.

Bill earned his B.A. from Miami University in 1959. He majored in Social Studies and English. He taught Jr. High at Roosevelt School in Hamilton, Ohio, and High School at Carthage, Indiana. Bill received his Master's degree in School Administration from Indiana University in 1969. He became Elementary Principal at Blooming Grove, Indiana, and served for nine years before coming to Culver.

Bill received his Specialist in Education degree from Ball State University in 1994.

He was elected to the Culver Town Board and served a four-year term.

Bill was a life member of Finney Shilling VFW Post 6919 and a member of Monterey American Legion Post 399.

After Bill retired from Culver Schools he spent many days walking his dog, Scout, and sitting in front of his house, happy to be in Culver and seeing the people.

Bill had two great-great-grandfathers who served as Union soldiers in the Civil War. His father served in the U.S. Navy in WW II, his grandson Cody served four years in the U.S. Marines, and his grandson Kyle served in the U.S. Army in Iraq.

Bill collected gravy boats, Elvis items, and had a Marilyn Monroe decorated room. He studied the Civil War and had most of the classics of literature.

Bill is survived by his children, William F. (Anita) Mills III of Greenwood, John C. (Kelly) Mills of Plymouth, Jeff L. (Lori) Mills of Plymouth, Mildred Colleen (Steve Penrod) Mills of Plymouth, Dustin A. Mills of Indianapolis and David O. (Jennifer) Mills of Granger; sisters, Joanne McQueen of Oxford, Ohio, and Sylvia Shibley of Brownsville, Indiana; brothers, Sonny of Las Vegas, Nevada, Dale of Hamilton, Ohio, and Dan McQueen of Upland, Indiana; 17 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren; 2 nieces and 10 nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, son, Derek Mills, 1 grandson, and 1 great-granddaughter.

A time of visitation will be held at the Odom Funeral Home, Culver, on Saturday, October 20, 2012, from 12-3 PM.

Funeral services will be held at 3 pm. Burial will follow at Culver Masonic Cemetery, with military rites by Finney Shilling VFW Post 6919.
