Robert B.D. Hartman Born Jun 13 1931 Blacksburg, Montgomery County,Virginia Death July 28, 2017 Culver, Marshall county, Indiana

CULVER - Robert Blaydes Duerson Hartman died Friday, July 28, 2017 in Culver, Indiana.

A native of Blacksburg, Virginia, he was the only child of William Tyler Hartman and Elizabeth Duerson Hartman.

Bob earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the College of Charleston. He was a proud member of the Alpha Tau Omega social fraternity.

From January 1956 to June 1957, he taught history at the Fork Union Military Academy in Virginia. Following the completion of a Masters in Education degree from the University of Virginia in 1958,

Hartman joined the faculty at the Culver Military Academy, Culver, Indiana, as an Assistant Instructor in the History Department. He eventually rose to Master Instructor, the highest rank held by Academy faculty, and held the McMillen Family Chair of American Heritage.

In 1962, he organized the Academy's first Audio-Visual Department which he headed until 1969. During the school year 1966-1967, Hartman completed an Ed. S. degree at Indiana University during a sabbatical leave from the Academy.

In 1972, during the administration of Lt. General John W. Carpenter, Hartman was named the Dean of Admissions for the Academy, a post he held until 1974 when he returned to the classroom. In 1985, Academy Superintendent, Dr. Ralph N. Manuel, appointed Hartman to the position of Executive Secretary of the Academy and Alumni Director.

In 1989, with the approach of the Academy's Centennial anniversary (1994), Hartman took the position of Historian and Archivist.

During this period, he published Pass In Review: Culver, A Century in the Making, which remains the definitive volume covering the establishment and growth of the Academy during its first 100 years. In addition, he published dozens of stories that brought to life Culver's most important people, places, events, and traditions.

Following his retirement from full-time service in 1994, he continued his work as Academies historian, publishing Boots and Saddles: Bugle Calls to a Century of the Black Horse Troop. This volume was produced in 1997, the year in which this signature organization of the Academy celebrated its 100th anniversary.

He came out of retirement in 2000 and for thirteen more years wrote additional stories that were not only published, but also presented to audiences around the country.

He was the driving force behind the establishment of the Academies Museum, which is currently located in downtown Culver. In total, Bob served Culver for 55 years.

In 2013, the endowed Robert B.D. Hartman Chair for Excellence in Teaching was created.

Bob's friends wish to thank Miller's Merry Manor of Culver and all the caregivers who helped him move peacefully to heaven.

A Memorial Service, led by The Reverend Thomas E. Haynes, will be held on Saturday, September 9, 2017 at 10 a.m. in Culver's Memorial Chapel, followed by a reception to which all attendees are invited. Bob will be interred in Culver.

Contributions may be made to the CMA ‘62 Bob Hartman Endowed Scholarship Fund, which was established earlier this year by former students from the Class of 1962. The mailing address is 1300 Academy Road #153, Culver, Indiana 46511.
