Col. John Seddon Fleet of La Jolla, Calif., a former member of the Culver Military Academy staff, died Friday, July 31, in a California hospital. Colonel Fleet, 86, was born in Missouri and was graduated from the University of Virginia. He was a member of the Academy Faculty from Sept. 1901, until Sept. 1943, where he was chairman of the Latin Department from 1918 to 1939 and was appointed Master Instructor in the Classics in 1936. He was chairman of the Foreign Language Department from 1939 until 1942, and served as Acting Superintendent from 1942 until 1943. Colonel Fleet was a member of the Board of Directors of The Culver Educational Foundation from 1942 until 1954, and in Nov., 1962, he was appointed as a Director Emeritus. Following his retirement he moved to La Jolla in 1946. Colonel Fleet was well-known in the Culver community as well as among the Academy personnel and was loved by all who knew him. His love of humanity was exemplified many times over during his Academy tenure. He was a member of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity, the Society of Colonial Wars and the Society of the Cincinnati. The body was sent to the family plot in Atlanta, Ga., for services and burial. Colonel Fleet is survived by a sister and a brother, Reginald, of LaJolla. WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 5, 1964 |
