MADE POSSIBLE BY RE-DIRECTING ROAD
TO ERECT BUILDING
Academy To Hani Surface Xew Hoad Which Will Kxtend From Artillery Nam to Koad lO.
As a result of the County Commissioners authorizing the changing of the road leading
through the academy's parade grounds, a $350.000 extension program has heen
announced by the officials of the Culver Military Academy.
The sanction of the commissioners was given Tuesday, and provides for a new road
starting from the present turn at the artillery barn and makes the road straight
from that point until it curves to meet Road 10. The new road will be cut through the
high bank at the artillery barn in such a way that the grade down to the level of the
parade ground will be much less than on the present hill by the lake with the S. turn.
Good visibility will be provided at all points.
The academy has agreed to give a forty foot right of way along the approved route and
has further agreed to hard surface an eighteen foot road in any manner the county
engineer orders.
In order that the public will not be shut off from the stretch of lake along the present
road the academy has agreed to leave open a forty footstretch down to the lake front
which will be open to the public at all times.
Work on this new road will start just as soon as the grade has been established for the
improvement of Road 10. which is expected to be within the next month or so.
It is hoped to have the road completed by fall, if not sooner.
With the changing of this road so as to give the Culver Military academy entire use of
the eastern part of their grounds an extensive improvement program, has been announced.
While all plans are still tentative, it is expected that an expenditure of 8350,000 will
be made so as to provide for an enlargement of the summer schools, and an improvement in
the facilities of the winter school.
The first moves will be to cover over the open ditch and sod down the present roadway.
Then this fall the woodcraft camp will be moved over to the lake front of the released
area with accompanying improvements.
This alone will call for a large expenditure of money as ail work will be permanent and
complete. It is probable that the new area will be built to take care of an enrollment
of S00 in the Woodcraft school. The present number is about 425.
It is also probable that a new-building for academic purposes will be built on the present
woodcraft site. This will probably be constructed within the next two years, it is stated,
and will provide much needed expansion for the winter school.
While these improvements are all be launched at this time the opening of this area will
allow the academy to plan other improvements and expansions as conditions warrant, which
will be of much value tp the futur of this community and to the iinstitution itself. -
