Huffington Library is Being Built
    Construction of the new Huffungton Library at the Culver Academies is expected to be completed in early 1993, the academies announced that this week,.

    The ROy Mo. Huffington family of Houston, Texas is the major donor of the more than $9 million project.

    Poring of concrete fooutings could begin as early as today, according to Ray Phillips, project superintendent for Ziolkowski Construction Inc. of South Bend, the firm selected by the school's board of trustees as the general contractor.

    The 45,000 square foot brick structure, designed by the late Paul Kennon of CRSS, Houston, Texas, is in the same style as the existing buildings on campus.

    In addition to housing the usual componoents of a library, the new facility will include seminar rooms, a faculty resource room and lounge, media centers, a small theater, computer areas and the Huffington Rare Book Collecion

    The 100,000 vilume library (with the potential to expande to 150,000 volumes) will be filly computerized, according to Ralph N. Manuel, president of the Academies. It will be amon the largest college preparatory school libaries in the county - CItizen

Tim de Christopher - Huffington Library, Culver, Indiana, 1991 - 1992 - Twenty-four 4 by 4-foot panels on the library facade depicting evolution from the origins of the cosmos to man in space.

It was the gift of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Huffington of Houston and Michael Huffington '65 of Los Angeles. Over 45,000 volumes were moved from the Legion Memorial Building library in a single day in a carefully orchestrated action by students.

The ethos of the Culver Academies was augmented with the dedication of the 47,000 sq. ft. Huffington Library on October 1, 1993.

Physically, the building provides a southern terminus to the academic quadrangle while affording library patrons a scholarly atmosphere and idyllic view of Lake Maxinkuckee. It houses a collection of approximately 55,000 volumes and, with it, the latest in information technology.
