Col. W. E. Gregory
1940 - Sep 18 - Col. Gregory Is Third Superintendent As Academy Begins Term
With the opening of the 47th session of the Culver Military Academy this week, Colonel
William Edward Gregory assumed his duties as the third superintendent of the Indiana
preparatory school.
Thirty-nine years of age, Colonel Gregory succeeds Brigadier General L. R. Gignilliat,
who is now the President of the Board of the Culver Educational Foundation.
For the past year the new superintendent had been serving as acting superintendent.
He came to Culver sixteen years ago, following his graduation from Miami (O.) University,
and after serving as principal of Hanover County Township High school, Butler, O. He held
successively and successfully the position of Director of Intramural Athletics, Tactical
Officer of the Field Artillery unit, Director of Appraisal and Personnel in the Office of
the Chairman of the Faculty, Dean of the Academy, and Acting Superintendent.
Colonel Gregory holds graduate degrees from the University of Michigan and Harvard and is a
graduate of the Field Artillery School of the U. S. Army. In June Colgate University awarded
Colonel Gregory the honorary degree of Doctor of Letters at the same that Wendell Willkie, a
fortime mer Culver midshipman, was also honored.
The new superintendent brings to his office a rare combination of the viewpoint of youth and
that of the experienced educational executive. He has studied Culver from many angles and
thoroughly understands the far-reaching policies of the institution, many of which he was
responsible in developing.
His policies regarding the academic, military, athletic, and personal phases of academic growth
have done much to stamp him as a recognized figure in secondary education in the country today.
