South Shore Drive aka Farrar Road

    Fifield Road -

    August 6, 1941 —The county highway force started work Monday on the improvement of the road at the south end of Lake Maxinkuckee. The highway is known as the Fifield Road and connects Road 17 with the East Side. The right-of-way is to be widened and the road surface will receive an oil mat. What is 20th B Rd. today.


This area was to have been a campground for many years - and also was referred to as 'Farrar's Woods', this is recorded as such on the 1900 Biological Survey map. From One Township Yesterday's: "There were 120 acres, known as the FARRAR lands now.


Much of the South Shore, now home to some of the lake's finest residences, remained undeveloped until the post-World War II period.

June 11, 1941 - Condemnaion of land along the road at the south end of Lake Maxinkuckee has been ordered by the county commissioners so that the right-of-way can be made a uniforn width of 40 feet.

1949, - Apr 27 - The development if the South Shore of the lake which has presented a busy construction scene during the past three years will soon see the complettion of several new cottages including
    the new $30,000 cottage being erected by Rev. M. R. Burgett of Flora
    and the cottages of L. F. Witham of Hammond
    Dr. D. R. Barber of Peru,
    H. L. Rector , also of Peru
    The beatutiful resdense of Fred Drommp of Logansport was recently completed

Among the summer residences which have been completed in this attractive development are the
    Dr J. Hafert, Burnell Coombs, Dr. Hillis, Charles Bailey, Robert Disher and Ed Bailey all of Logansport.
    Charles Van Sittman of Chicago;
    Mr and Mrs George Phillips, Dr. G. F. Henricks, Charles Zobell of Chicago.



Among the new homes planned for the area is a new all-aluminum dwelling.

Is on the non-lakefront - Shillings 2nd Subdivision - and has a deeded lake access property. This piece of subdivision lays between the lakefront addresses of 348 to 548 by the maps - more work has to be done in this area. Addresses that bear the Oak Cresent addresses are or were: 9, 11, 13, 60; others bear the S. Shore but are in this subdivision on the non lakefront side.
