Robert Rust Named Superintendent of culver Community Schools

Under Picture: Robert Rust has been named superintendent of the Culver Community Schools, the board of school trustees announced here late last week. He will succeed Frank McLane, who will retire on June 30 - APRIL 14, I960 Citizen

Woodie McGlothin, school board president, in announcing the appointment, commented, "We are certainly indebted to Mr. McLane, who has rendered significant educational leadership to our reorganized school district during the past three years."

The school official went on to point out, "Mr. McLane's recently announced plan to retire comes at a time when our construction plans for a new high school building are being readied, and speaking for the board, we are gratified in securing Mr. Rust, certainly no stranger to this area, to head our school system."

Culver school officials will soon review applications for the post of high school principal. The principalship vacancy was created by the resignation of Kenneth Cole, who has been named superintendent of the Dekalb Eastern Corporation.

Members of the school board in a addition to McGlothin are: Walter Johnson, Dr. Oscar Wesson, Tom Russell, and Everett Dowd.

Both Mr. McLane and Mr. Rust are former instructors on the Culver High School staff. Mr. McLane, who graduated from DePauw University and Northwestern Universi ty, will complete 41 years as a teacher and school administrator in June. Before becoming head of the Culver School System three years ago, he served as superintendent of the Marshall County schools for 10 years. For three years he headed the Marshall County Reorganization Committee on which he served as secretary. He is a member of the National Association of School Superintendents, the NEA and ISTA, and the Methodist Church. Regarding retirement plans, Mr. McLane commented that for the immediate future his plans were rather indefinite. He and Mrs. McLane, who is a Culver elementary teacher, plan to visit a bit more often with their attorney son, Frank, and family in Marion, Ind., and their daughter, Mrs. Frank Hyde, and family i n Annapolis, Md.

Mr. Rust, the newly named head of the Culver School system, is former editor- publisher of The Citizen and the Argos Reflector and served for a number of years as director of public relations at Culver Military Academy. He is a member of the United Church of Christ . He is actively associated with NEA, the ISTA, the Hoosier Press Association, the Public Relations Society of America, the Indianapolis Press Club, the I.O.O.F., F. & A . M . , the Lions Club, B.P.O.E., Sigma Delta Chi, and Toastmaster's International. Mrs. Rust teaches elementary music, and their daughter, Barbara, (Mrs. James Watters) resides in West Lafayette.

Robert T. RUST, 80, of 830 College Ave., Culver , died at 6:45 p.m. Saturday in Holy Cross Parkview Hospital, Plymouth, following a two-year illness.

He served as a teacher and administrator in several area schools and was at one time the editor and publisher of the Culver Citizen.

He was born Dec. 8, 1905 in Feanklin, In., the son of Thomas and Minnie Rust. He graduated from Franklin High School and earned his Batchlor of Science degree at Franklin College. He later earned a masters degree from Indiana University.

He married on August 25, 1931 Bertha Mas Setser, who survives, and moved to Culver where he taught journalism and social studies at the high school.

In 1940 he became director of public relations at the Culver Military Academy until 1948,l when he became editor and publisher of the Citizen.

In 1953 he became principal of West Township school and later became the assistant superintendent of the Plymouth Community Schools. He was superintendent of th Culver Community School system when he retired in 1971. He then ran a public reltation agency from his home until ill helth forced him to stop.

He was a member of Grace United Church of CHrist, Culver; Sigma Alpha Epsilon; Sigma Delta Chi, and honorary journalism faternity; Blue Key; Indianapolis Press Club; Hoosier State Association; Public Relations Society of America; a former member of the board of trustees of Ancilla College and the board of Northern Indiana Health Systems Angency I nc.

Also a Sagamore of the Wabash, Masonic Lodge, Maxinkuckee I.O.O.F., Chamber of COmmerce, Lions CLub and the Logansport B.P.O. Elks.

Surviving arfe hhis wife, one daughter, Barbara R. Watters of Chestefield, Va.; three grandchildren, Mike,Anne and Suzanne Watters; one sister, Mary Minner, Franklin; and several neices and nephew. Two sisters, two brothers, and parents preceeded him in death

Services will be held today at 10:00 a.m. at the Grace United Church of Christ with the Rev. Walter Vonderohe officiating. Burial will be at the Garland Brook Cemetery COlumbus, In. Robert T. RUST, 80, of 830 College Ave., Culver , died at 6:45 p.m. Saturday in Holy Cross Parkview Hospital, Plymouth, following a two-year illness.

He was born Dec. 8, 1905 in Columbus to Thomas and Minnie HAILWAY RUST. He moved from Franklin to Culver in 1931. On Aug. 25, 1931 in Columbus he married Bertha May SETSER, who survives. He was a graduate of Franklin High School, earned a bachelor’s degree from Franklin College and a master’s degree from Indiana University. He was public relations direcrtor for Culver Military Academy from 1940 to 1948 and again from 1953 to 1958. He had been editor and publisher of The Culver Citien from 1948 to 1953, principal of West Township School, assistant superintendent of Plymouth Community Schools and superintendent of Culver Community Schools, retiring from the latter position in 1971. After retiring from the Culver position, he operated the Robert Rust Public Relations Agency for many years.

He was a member of Culver Grace United Church of Christ, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Sigma Delta Chi, Blue Key, Indianapolis Press Club, Hoosier State Press Association, Public Relations Society of America, the board of dirctors of the Northern Indiana Health Systems Agency, Inc., Culver Masonic Lodge, Maxinkuckee I.O.O.F. Lodge, Culver Chamber of Commerce, Culver Lions Club, Logansport Elks Lodge, Nartional Education Association, Indiana State Teachers Association, and was chairman of the board of directors of the Indiana Retired Teachers Association. He was a Sagamore of the Wabash and was a former member of the Ancilla College board of trustees.

Surviving with the wife are a daughter, Mrs. James (Barbara) WATTERS, Chesterfield, Va.; three grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. Mary MINNER, Franklin. Two sisters and two brothers preceded in death.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Culver Grace United Church of Christ with the Rev. Walter VONDEROHE officiating. Burial will be in the Garland Brook Cemetery, Columbus. Graveside services will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday. Friends may call after 2 p.m. today at the Bonine Funeral Home, Culver .

Marshall County days for Robert and Bertha May Rust natives of Columbus began in September, 1931 whe Bob began teaching in Culver High School.

Bertha May, a graduate of Columbus High School and Bob (Franklin High School), were married in the brides home, August 25, 1931. Daughter of Scott and Mary Gelfius) Setser, Betha May, born 1908 and Bob, born 1905, son of Thomas and Minnie (Hailway) Rust, met at Franklin College.

Graduating from Jordan Conservatory of Music (Butler University), Bachelor of Music degree. Bertha May taught music, 1928-32, Cass County and Johnson County before teaching at Culver and Green Townships.

Receiving his Master's Degree , Indiana University, Bob taught history and journalism at Culver Highs School until 1939 when he became public relations director, supervisor, publication editor alumnus, Culver Miltary Academy.

He and Bertha May became editor and publisher, Culver Citize Press, 1949, Arpos Reflector, 1951. They sold their newspaper printing business, 1953 and estahblished their own public relations business, serving area public relations and advertising accounts, 1950's-1981.

In September 1953 Bob returned to his foromer post at Culver Military Academy, serving for five years before becoming principal of West Township Schools, 1958-1964; Assitant Superintendent, Plymouth COmmunity Schools, 1965-1966; and Superintendent, Culver Cummunity Scholls, 1966-1971.

The Rusts are members of Grace United Church of Christ, Culver , where Bertha May had served as Director of Music since 1934. She is a member of Franklin College and Butler Univeristy Alumni Associataions, Delta Delta Delta, Tri Kappa and Culver City Club., accompanist Maxinkuckee Glee CLub, 1930's, organist at CulverMilitary CHapel, 1941-45 and Culver String Ensemble, 1940's.

Bob is a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Pi Kappa Delta, Blue Key, Indiana University and Franklin College Alumni Associations; Indianapolis Press Club, Hoosier State Press Association and Public Relattion's Society of America. He is also a member of Sigma Delta Chi, Elks Lodge, Masomic Lodge, International Order of Odd Fellows, Lions Club, and the Chamber of Commerce. Both are memberd of the Indiana National Retired Teachers Association.

He is the recipient of honors from Purdue 1952; plaque citations Town of Culver Trustees 1980; Junior Chamber of Commerce, 1967; Culver Teachers, 1970; Culver School Board, 1971; Grace Board, Ancilla College, 1979' "Sagamore of the Wabash", a state honor, 1980.

In December, 1940, the Rusts moved into thei new College Avenue home and welcomed their daughter Barbara, who attended Culver Schools and graduated with honors. As a McMahon Scholar, she graduated Phi Beta Kappa, DePauw University in 1962 where she was a member of Delta Zeta Sorotity

Barbara and James Watters were marred April, 1962 in Culver Military Academt CHapel. James Watters received his Ohio University Master's of Art degree 1963. He was insuctor-coach, Wolcottville, before moving to Lafayett, Klondike High Schooll staff. In 1969 he became coach, Alpena, Michigan High School where the family resided for thirteen years, transferring to Byrd High School, Chesterfield, Virginia, 1982.

Barbara is member of the executive staff, Kissel Company Richmond, Virginia. The Rusts' grandchildren include Michael Allan, and Suzanne Watters, all in college in the mid-1980's.

Bob took leave of his school administration post, 1971. Bertha May retired in 1972 after thirty-seven and one half years of teaching. Both became quite active serving clients in the Rust Agency. In 1981 for reasons invovling helath, Bob's activity became quite limited. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Rust.

Bertha May Rust, 91 of 830 College Avenue, Culver , Indiana, died at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 18, 2000 at Miller's Merry Manor in Culver , Indiana.

Bertha was born to Scott and Mary (Gelfius) Setser on September 10, 1908 in Columbus, Indiana. She has lived in the Culver area from many years. Before moving to Culver , she was married on August 25, 1931 in Columbus, Indiana to Robert T. Rust. She was a member of the Grace Church in Culver . Before retirement, Bertha was a music teacher for the Culver Elementary School.

Bertha is survived by her daughter, Barbara J. (James) Watters of Midlothian, Virginia, two grandsons, Michael R. (Deborah) Watters of Indianapolis, Indiana, Alan J. (Joanna) Watters of Birmingham, Alabama, granddaughter, Suzanne L. (Mark) Saunders of Chester, Virginia, and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert T. Rust, father, Scott Setser, mother, Mary (Gelsius) Setser, and one sister.

Visitation will be from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 21 at Bonine Funeral Home. Rev. J. William Schiller will officiate the service which will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 22, 2000 at Culver Grace United Church of Christ, Culver , Indiana. Interment will follow at 4:00 p.m. in Columbus, Indiana at the Garland Brook Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Culver Grace United Church of Christ.
