Bertram B. Culver Jr., a business executive and community leader in St. Louis, died Friday (July 22, 1994)
at St. Luke's Hospital in west St. Louis County after a brief illness. He was 84 and lived in West County.
Mr. Culver held several executive posts with the old Wrought Iron Range Co. from the 1930s until the company
was sold in 1960.
In the 1960s, he was a general chairman and chairman of the education division of the United Fund Campaign
(now the United Way).
He was a board member of Boatmen's Bank for many years. He also was a former board member of many local
businesses, including the Granite City Steel Co., the old Scruggs-Vandervoort-Barney, St. Louis Union Trust
Co. and the old St. Louis-San Francisco Railway. He was also a former Missouri chairman of the Radio Free
Europe Fund.
Mr. Culver was born in 1909 in St. Louis. He graduated in 1928 from Culver Military Academy in Culver, Ind.,
where he later became a trustee. He was also chairman of the Culver Educational Foundation. He served in
leadership roles at the academy for more than 55 years. His grandfather, Henry Harrison Culver, founded the
academy in 1894. The younger Mr. Culver earned a bachelor's degree in 1932 from Yale University.
Among the survivors are his wife of 58 years, Jane Metcalfe Culver; two sons, B.B. Culver III (CMA '58) and
David M. Culver (CMA '59); two daughters, Carol C. Bitting and Jane C. Rouse; a brother, H. Harrison Culver;
nine grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. All survivors are of West County.

Ladue, Mo..- Services for Bertam Beach Culver Jr., 84, Ladue, former chairman of the Culver Educational Foundation
and grandson of Henry Harrison Culver, the founder of Culver (Ind.) Military Academy, were conducted Monday in St.
Peter''s Episcopal Church.
He died Friday.
In 1932, the Culver family created the Culver Educational Fondation, which at the time constituted the largest gift
to private secondary school education. Mr. Culver was named treasurer in 1933. He was elected president in 1953 and
in 1969 was named chairman, a position he held until 1985.
He retired from the board in 1988, at which time he was named emertius trustee.
The foundation is affiliated with Culver Military Academies, which are boarding schools offering nine-month college
prepartory curriculas for grades 9 through 12.
Mr. Culver was active in the family-owned business, Wrought Iron Range Co., St. Louis. It manufactured the Home
Comfort brand of family and hotel kitchen ranges for many years before being sold in 1959.
He also served as a director of Granite City Steel Co. and Frisco Railway. Mr. CUlver also was a director of First
National Bank and St. Louis Union Trust Co., which later merged into Boatman's Bancshares. He was a director of
Boatman's Trust Co.
In 1960, he was named general chairman of the United FUnd compaign in St. Louis and he served as its president from
1961-1962. In 1966 he was Missouri state chairman of the Radio Free Europe Fund, and in the 1960's was a board member
of the Mary Institute of St. Louis and Chathan Hall in Virginia, both preparatory schools for girls.

Jane Rouse; brother H. Harrison Culver; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

Bertram "Terry" B. Culver, III at the age of 84 died on Sunday, June 23, 2024, after a cascading
series of health issues following a fall in his apartment.
Terry was born on April 4, 1940, in St. Louis, Missouri, to Bertram B. Culver, Jr. and Jane Metcalfe
Culver.
He attended St. Louis Country Day School and transferred to Culver Military Academy where he graduated
as Regimental Adjutant in 1958. Terry then matriculated to Yale University, graduating with honors in
1962.
After serving a brief tour in the US Army in Hawaii, Terry returned to St. Louis in 1963 where over the
next decade he worked for Gardner Advertising, The Sporting News and as an elementary school teacher.
In 1970 he was elected to the Board of Trustees of The Culver Educational Foundation where he served for
16 years. He remained a bachelor choosing to stay in St. Louis where he lived a full, multi-faceted and
energetic life.
As one of his admirers stated, Terry was a “wonderful, quirky, hilarious, soul who delighted all who knew
him with his wit, wisdom and humor”. He was generous to a fault, a man who loved his extended family and
treasured his friends.
Terry’s passions revolved around his beloved horses, all sports (especially Cardinal baseball), The Opera
Theater of St. Louis, Strathalbyn Farms, but most of all maintaining strong friendships with all he held
dear.
Terry was preceded in death by his sister, Jane Culver Rouse (Ernest T. Rouse III, MD).
He is survived by his sister Carol Culver Bitting, and brother David M. Culver (Joan McKee Culver) of St.
Louis and numerous nieces and nephews spread from California to New England.
A memorial service will be held in the fall.

husband Ernest T. "Sonny" Rouse, M.D.; son David Rouse (Sarah Drew Rouse) of St. Louis,
daughters Molly Rouse Ketcham (John Ketcham) of Arlington, VA, Jenny Rouse of St. Louis, and
four wonderful grandchildren, Annie, Andrew, Janey and Hunter. She is also survived by her
sister Carol L. Culver Bitting, brothers, Bertram Beach Culver III and David Metcalfe
Culver (Joan).
Mrs. Rouse attended Mary Institute School in St. Louis and received her undergraduate degree
from the University of Pennsylvania.
