1954 - Feb 3 - New Equipment For Firemen In Trone's Window
Several pieces of much needed new equipment for the Culver Fire Department have arrived and are on display in the window of the Don Trone Shop this week.

Included are several lengths of new high pressure Dacrillon hose, two new type pressure nozzles for use on 21-inch hose, four high power portable lights complete with batteries, and a 36-unit all-weather first-aid kit.

These pieces of equipment are the most modern of their kind and have long been needed by the department. They will add greatly to the efficiency of the fire fighters in this community.

All of this equipment was donated to the Culver Fire Department by the Lake Maxinkuckee Association at a cost of several hundred dollars, and it has also promised Chief David Burns additional support from time to time as needed.

Membership of the Association includes most of the summer cottagers as well as several of the year-around residents, Culver Military Academy, and the Town of Culver.

The Association also provides the Safety Patrol on the roads and lake during the summer months.

The Culver Citizen, in behalf of the entire community, wishes to thank our civic-minded and efficient firemen for their outstanding work through the years.

Our boys are not at all like the hometown fire department recently described by Hoosier TV star, Herb Shriner, who said: "That was really a smart outfit remember one time, if it hadn't been for them our barn would have burned down in 10 minutes but they kept it going all night!".

1956 - Oct 3 - Fire Chief Dave Burns Speaks Before Culver Lions Club
Fifty-six members of the Culver Lions Club and their guests enjoyed a program presented by Culver-Union Township Fire Chief Dave Burns and members of the Fire Department last Wednesday evening at the Lions Den.

Fire Chief Burns explained in his brief and interesting talk the anticipated purchase of a modern fire truck, equipped to carry all the needs for any emergency, as well as the uses of the various pieces of fire equipment.

Mr. Burns explained that financing of the new equipment would be over a three year period and no tax increase would be needed to cover the additional costs.

During a question and answer period Chief Burns brought out the fact that the resuscitator used by the Fire Department was presented by the Culver Lions Club 12 years ago as a result of their first community service project...

1956 - Nov. 21 - New $11,000 Fire Truck in Offing
Advertising of bids for a new fire truck to be paid jointly by the town and Union township was ordered Monday night by the town trustees at their regular meeting.

This truck, which was explained by Chief David Burns, will replace the now obsolete one now being used.

It will probably cost $11,000 and will have a cab to seat six firemen besides having two pumps, a low and a high pressure, and will be capable of going alone to any fire thus saving the other truck in town as emergency equipment for answering a second alarm.

It is reasonable to believe that the two trucks and the jeep will be sufficient motor equipment and will save much maintenance costs.... by Robert Kyle Culver Citizen

1956 - Dec 5 - ...Town Board... Fire Fighting Equipment
A group of dairy farmers principally, headed by John A. Newman and Wayne Kline. were interested in having the town and township reconsider trading in the obsolete fog-system fire truck and retaining it as an added means of fire protection.

Fire Chief David Burns pointed out that this piece of apparatus was in bad shape and not only would it cost at least $1.500 to make it usable but that there was no room in the fire station for this additional equipment.

It was finally agreed to ask the two companies bidding on the new truck to submit bids both on a trade-in. basis and also for cash.

Bids already have been advertised and will be opened at the next meeting Dee. 17.

The Academy was represented by Col. L. E. BeBout. ...

1956 - Dec. 19 - Fireworks Galore At Town Board's Monday Meeting
Tibbetts and Osborn In Verbal Battle Over New Fire Truck

Harmony between town and township reached the breaking point Monday night at the regular town trustess meeting over the purchase of a $11,00 fire truck.

Union Township Trusetee Glen S. Tibbetts charged Town Trustee President Donald Osborn of delaying tactics in setting a special meeting for Firday night to decide on bids, and with the using "dictatorial and insulting manners" in meeting the request of taxpayers appearing before the board.

Under the present arrangement town and township each pay half the costs of the new fire truck.

    Many Attend Session.

Bids on the new truck were opened before about 30 spectators and representative of three manufactures and three suppliers. Dick McClure Ford Sales was low bidder on the truck chasis at $3,0809.28 and John Bean Co. was low on the fire truck at $9,910 with $3,000 allowance on the old truck.

After considerable discussion regarding the retention of the old fog-type truck led by John A. Newman, President Osborn entertained a motion to table discussion of bids until a special meeting set for Friday night.

Then most of the firemen and spectators left the chambers and continued the discussion in the fire station upstairs.

After routine business was transacted by the trustees the question of asking the firemen their opinion of the various bids was brought up and it was sugggested that the firemen, led by chief Dave Burns, be invited to state their preference of the bids without waiting for the Friday night meeting. Chief Burns said that the firemen had agreed on what they wanted and at this point Township Trustee Tibbets suggested that the board meeting be adjourned and that the contract be let then instead of waiting until Friday.

Osborn told Tibbets that "I don't believe in doing things this way." which started the flare-up.

    Tempers Flare.

Tibbets then launched into a 10-minute tirade directed at Osborn in which he accused him of "insulting the intelligence of the audience and mistreating taxpayers" who have appeared before the board on previous occasions.

"Furthermore, in saying you don't believe in doing things this way" you have implied that I do and am crooked" Tibbetts shouted. He then said that he would not attend the Friday meeting. He later recanted his decision.

    More Fireworks Friday?

It is believed that a large audience will be present for a continuance of the "Fireworks", which has stimulated intense interest in local government as never before.

Following the board meeting spectators, firemen, city employees and the fire truck hucksters gathered in one of the many coffee shops and long into the night reenacted the most interesting town meeting held in these parts in the memory of our oldest citizen, Charlie Eaton almost 95...--- by Robert Kyle Culver Citizen

    Gentlemen:
Since you have been selected to act as advisors to the Town Board in matters pertaining to the fire department, you are invited to stop in at the Dick McClure Ford Sales and see the new fire truck chassis.

Next Tuesday, Fire chief David Burns plans to take it to the plant in Michigan to have the body built on.

Very respectfully, William R. Easterday, President, Town Board.

1957 - May 1 - ... It Mist Be The Lake Water...
THE NEWLY APPOINTED Fire Advisory Commission is really doing a job.

First off, they are insisting on an inventory of all fire equipment, and are about to recommend buying of the rescue boat for use on the Lake in emergencies only.

Some of the volunteer firemen weren't too happy about being scrutinized by the commission but since the fire department operation is a joint town and township undertaking, and public funds are being used, it's a mighty good thing that some public spirited citizens are willing to spend a lot of time to make sensible recommendations.

That's what we need around here.

There has been too much free-wheeling.

The commission consists of J. T. Stinchcomb and Walter Johnson, who represent the town; John A. Newman and Paul S. Ulery, the township: Don Trone, Lake Maxinkuckee Association: and L. E. BeBout {sic LeBounty}, Culver Military Academy.

1957 - May 22 - New $15,000 Fire Station Goal Of Junior Women
By MRS. IRWIN D. HATTEN Project Chairman

The first meeting for the new Fire Station was conducted by the Maxinkuckee Federated Junior Woman's Club Thursday, April 25, at the Methodist Church.

Representatives from 17 organizations participated in the discussion which was led by Mrs. Hugo Anderson, president.

The following information concerning the project was supplied by Fire Chief Dave Burns:
The proposed building will be two stories, measuring 66 x 50 feet. The first story will contain a grease and wash room, meeting room, utility room, two cells, Police Chief's office, and four stalls for fire trucks.

The second story is to be one large room, 66 x 50 feet, for the Town Hall, with space for the lerk-Treasurer's business files, etc.

The new building will have space for all equipment and supplies, some of which are now stored in the Pumping Station.

If the station is to be erected, the old Fire Station will be used for the Town maintenance trucks and storage for other supplies. For example, the Christmas ornaments are now in the Pumping Station.

    Firemen To Donate Labor

To decrease the cost for a building this size, the Culver Firemen have volunteered their labor, which is felt to be very generous and beyond their call of duty.

With the present Fire Station fast becoming outdated because of population growth, heavier fire trucks, more equipment, etc.. the volunteered labor at this time will save the taxpayers approximately $7.500 at present rates.

The estimated price for the new Fire Station is $15.000. This covers all material. except for brick or limestone for the front decoration of the building.

This, Chief Burns explained does not have to be added until a more convenient time. Raising the needed $15.000 was discussed and the popular feeling was by the following two means:
      1. Entire amount by taxation (which would be less than 1 cent per $100 per property owner). They also felt that this would be more fair as the entire township will be benefited by the Fire Station and should be charged accordingly.

      2. Half the amount by taxation and half by combined community benefits or pledges.

The Town Board has stated if there is to be any fund raising programs, they will co-operate by appointing a board of responsible citizens to handle these funds and report same to the community.

We would like your opinion on the above information, and will appreciate hearing same.

Please direct any inquiries or opinions to: Maxinkuckee Federated Junior Woman's Club, Mrs. Irwin D. Hatten, Project Chairman.

1957 - May 29 - A Depressing Trip Through Culver's Fire Station

1957- Jun 19 - It Must Be The Lake Water - The new fire truck is almost an actuality. At least it about to be paid for with the town and township borrowing $5600 for the remainder after the Lake Association donated $835 for the six-man cab and the Academy gave $250.
When the subject was first brought up it was estimated that the total cost would be about $3,000 with the trade-in of the old truck, but curbstone estimated costs and actual costs are somewhat different.

With the trade-in of the old truck actually cost approcimately $10,000. The township and town, acting on the curbstone estimate, set up $1,600 each in their budgets. Then when reckoning came they were shy $5,600 so they had to go into deficit spending and borrow the diifference ...

1957 - Jun 12 - It Must be The Lake Water

MUCH SENTIMENT seems to 'be developing in opposition to mew fire station and jail house.

After the first anonymous blast of the ain't-it-awful-Mable variety of what a deplorable fire station we have, sound conclusions are being reached.

Here are some of them--not mine. picked up:

The town can't afford a new combination fire station, jail and town hall which would cost upwards of $150,000 regardless of what picayunish bake sales would bring in, which after all would be paid for by the community and compete against taxpaying local merchants. And donated labor wouldn't help much, considering - the cost of materials for anyg substantial enough to last an amortization period of say, 50 years.

The town hasn't demonstrated any too well its ability to maintain anything. A few years ago a - tractor wag allowed to freeze up and be ruined, and a $10,000 fire truck is needed every 10 years or so.

The present fire station, although not a show place or a lavish club house, is still able to house the over-abundance of fire fighting equipment.

No jail is needed because none inhabit it except drunks sleeping-it-off who can. take to the straw-pile. When any desperate characters come along the sheriff and state police toss them in the county clink.

The town hall has been refurbished and is certainly adequate, considering the lack of attendance at town board meetings

. To finance such a building would cause a sharp increase in local tax levies which are already too high, considering that the budget hag been So padded that an accumulated $48.000 is lying Tore drawing no interest.

Furthermore, too many watch-dogs mitigate against squandering of monies on unneeded projects such as the State Tax Board, County Board of Review and County Council, and State Board of Accounts, all of whom would look with jaundiced eye at such lavishness. ...

1957 - June 19 - It Must Be Lakw Water

THE NEW FIRE TRUCK is almost an actuality. At least it is about to be paid for with the town and township borrowing $5,600 for the remainder after the Lake Association donated $825 for, the six-man cab and the Academy gave $250.

When the subject was first brought up it was estimated that the total cost would be about $3,000 with the trade-in of the old truck, but curbstone estimated costs and actual costs are somewhat different.

With the trade-in the truck actually cost app approximately $10,000. The township and town, acting on the curbstone estimate, set up $1,600 each in their budgets.

Then when the reckoning came they were shy $5,600 so they had to go into deficit spending and borrow the difference.

And that is just what can happen to a new fire station deal if they depend on the same curbstone estimate that the fire station will cost $15,000. Anyone who has ever built anything knows better. Did you recently build a one-car garage? All right, then multiply that cost to house four trucks, a jail, a city hall and offices, and a firemen's clubhouse.

Also a new obstacle has reared its ugly head, in the form of publie works. And there comes an end to donated labor, because the union prevailing wage for the area must be paid. There the South Bend Building Trades Council enters the picture, and that stops any donated labor. ...

1958 - Aug 6 - Fire Station and City Hall Plans Are Considered
The Culver Fire Department, one of the most effective volunteer organizations of its kind in Indiana, has plans to erect a new building on the present station site within a year or so.

Local firemen were present at the Town Board meeting Monday night with their plans for a new building 64 by 84 feet with stalls for five trucks, a meeting and office room, a police officers' headquarters and cells for inmates, a kitchen for meetings, and a council room and office for the Town Board and the clerk-treasurer.

    Really Low Figure

The total cost, including the lighting and heating system, will run $27,672.

The Town Board accepted the plans with considerable enthusiasm but informed the firemen they would require further study since the high budget for the ensuing year does not make it possible, to include the suggested amount.

Two- Way Radio System is Boon To Our Firemen

Our fine Culver-Union Township voluntary fire department can do a better job - especially in emergency situations - - since the addition of a two-way radio system in two of its vehicles and the fire station a little more than a month ago.

An additional receiving unit on the same frequency is in operation in the town police car.

"The emergency uses can't be overemphasized," say Fire Chief Dave Burns. "When we're out fighting a country fire, sometimes there may not be: a phone for a mile or two around. "It we need more equipment, or a doctor or ambulance, all we do is call back to the station on the radio."

      Can Call Nearby Towns

And the frequency the fire department uses will soon be used by all the radio-equipped fire departments in the country. This will speed up the calling in of re-enforcements from other areas in case of a serious fire, where aid is needed.

"We hope to put a full-time fireman on nights to handle such emergency calls," said Chief Burns.

The radio units have been tested up to 20 miles away, and calls come in "clear as a bell." said Dave. "We can hear the Chicago fire calls, which are on the same frequency, like they were in the next county."

The aerial tor the unit at the Culver fire station 19 135 feet high, atop the town water tower.

      Donated By Academy

Funds for the unit were donated by Culver Military Academy, when it was learned that no money was available in the town budget for such equipment.

1959 - Feb. 11 - Culver Citizen - At the Feb. 2 meeting [town board] the members of Culver's volunteer fire department were present enmass to request a salary for Mrs. David Burns, who answers all phone calls to the fire department. She is on duty 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and it was suggested that she be given a $300 annual salary for her efforts. - Of interest the phone was in the David Burns house until he retired from the fire department in 1974; also remaining behind was the toggle switch with its small red lens with which the fire sirens were activated, this still remains on the wall in the dining room as of 2013.
