1983 - Jul 12 - Firemen Demonstrate New Equipment
Fireman Glen Whitemars demonstrates the fire department's newest piece of equipment, the deluge gun. The gun can pump 750 gallons of water per minute and can spray water easily into the upper floor of a three story building.

Participating in the demonstration Saturday are: (kneeling) Don Stubbs and Lance Overmyer. Standing are (left to right) Allen Becker, of Logansport and Culver, vice-president of Uniiversal Fire Apparatus Corp., who sold the gun to the fire department, Bill Martin, Glen Whitmarsh and Jim Dickey

The Culver-Union Township Fire Department demonstrated one of it's newest pieces of equipment Saturday at the Academy pier.

The Elkhart Deluge Gun was added to the fire department's arsenal of fire fighting tools with funds raised at the fireman's festival a year ago.

The firemen pointed the powerful sprayer out over the water and the water reached a good 100 feet. When pointed up in the air, the gun can easily pump water into a third floor structure.

The gun is equipped with two nozzels so that it can either shoot water in a direct stream or in a fog. The gun will pump 750 gallons of water per minute.

The firemen all hope that the gun will never be needed except to wash down the streets during clean up week (as they did this year), but it is extremely important to have the capability on hand if necessary. - Citizen
