The contract for a water works system in Culver was signed last week, and Mr. Cole,
the promoter, and Mr. Harrop, the engineer, promice that material will be delivered
in time to construct the plant this fall
It was a great week's work.
With in five days the remaining amount of subscriptios to the $4,000 of preferred
stovk was secured, the town board met and adopted a resolution to take $4,000 of
the common stock, the stick holders met and organized the Culver Waterworks
company, the directors met and elected officers, and the contract with the National
construction company was signed
That's not so slow, and it proves that the citizens of Culver can do things when tey
get into action.
The contract provides that for $7,900 the National Constrcution company of SOuth
Bend will lay 4,000 feet of 4inch main and 1,000 feet of 6 inch main froma point in
front of the Lake Side hotel or possoibly the Bradley hotel up Scott street to Main,
then SOuth of Main to Nemj. Easterday's about midway between the Evangelical
church and the end of the main street sidewalk, with a loog from Scottstreet south
past the Reformed Church to Washington street, thence west to the Citizen office
corner where connection is made with the Main street pipe.
The pipe on Main street woll ne b inches in diameter, the remaining under 4inched.
The contract further invuldes a lot, a pumping station, all nessaru machiner fora
compressed air system, on cart, 500 geet of hose and 15 hydrants. The town will
furnish the well which Mr. Cole guaranteed get drilled for $200 or less
The pumping station will be located on the corner opposite the Reformed church.
The lot bought of W. H. Porter for $265, is 66X99.It is a central location, and should the
town conclude to add a second story to the building gor towh hall purposes it will be
accesible for all time to come
Based on a 20-year bond issue the additional tax exteded agains the property during
the first year will be about $770 if the estimated cost of perationg the plant is
correct. As the bonds are paid off year by year the smaller interest charf will slighly
reduce the amount each year.
A levy of about 35 centes on the $100 valuation will be necessary to provided the
amount. As an off set the property owners will secure a considerable reduction in
insurance rates.Just howm much it will be is not known, but it ought to equal the
additional tac.
The Citizen believes that the people have done a splendid thing for the town. The
value of the waterworks will be mre appreciated the longer we have them, bot only
for th protetion and healthfulness to every yser.
Furthermore they will prove a creditable advertisementfor the town, and will also
stimulate the local pride of every resident
Mr. Coles parit in the work of securing the improvemt is such that he was a right to feel
proud of his acheivent. It is due entirely to he persistance and that the plans has been
sucessful
