Academy History Building Burns Saturday Night
40-Year-Old Unit Ruined By Fire
Fire of undetermined origin badly damaged the interior of the History Building on the Academy
campus Saturday night [January 12}.
Discovered about 8:15, the Culver Fire Department brought the blaze under control about 10 p.m.
Apparently the fire broke out on the second floor of the building which housed eight classrooms
and the office of the History Department. It quickly spread through the entire second story into
the attic where firemen, hampered by extreme cold weather, battled extensive smoke which came
through the building and out the windows because of a metal roof.
The blaze broke through the north side of the building and later burned down a stairway to the
first floor.
There was extensive smoke and water damage in the four first floor classrooms. Full extent of the
damage is not known at this time.
Fire Chief Dave Burns andmembers of the Fire Department continued fighting the blaze until was
extinguished about midnight.
On Monday history moved to various rooms in other campus buildings. wherethey will be housed until
the completion of the the new Eppley Hall of Humanties in late February.
The History Building. located Art between Music and and Mathematies Buildings was built about 40 ago.
Officials, indicated that no decisionhas been made as to future plans for the structure.
