OSBORN FARM HOME PARTIALLY BURNED FURNISHINGS SAVED
Fire Department Did Efficient Work In Saving House Occupied By Russell Croy.
The dwelling on the W. 0. Osborn farm west of town was saved from complete destruction last Monday
morning by the effective and persistent work of the fire department.
The exact origin of the fire is not known, but it is believed to have started from either a defective
chimney in the kitchen or from flying sparks that lit on the porch roof.
When Mrs. Croy discovered the blaze she left for her husband who was shocking corn.
When the department arrived the enclosed back porch and a portion of the kitchen was ablaze, while the
balance of the house was full of smoke. By that time passers-by had all the household goods out of the
house and attention was turned to fighting the fire.
At first glance it seemed that the house was sure to go, but the fire department pitched into their task
and with the aid of a nearby tank of water, had the fire checked until the chemicals smothered the flames.
The fire department did the best work they have done for a long time and won a hard fight against odds.
Much credit is due Chief Charles Bolin for his leadership and activity.
The loss on the house will amount to about $1,000 to $1,500 and is covered by insurance, while Croy's personal
loss will be about $100 and is not protected by insurance.
