William S. Easterday





We have with us today Culver's oldest business man from point of number of years in continuous business. It was 46 years ago, November 1893, to be exact that W. S. Easterday took up the business he sill heads, Easterday Funeral Home, in which he is now associated with his son, William R. Easterday, and his wife.

He estimates that he has buried more people that the present population of Culver.

Mr. Easterday was born in Marion county, Ohio, but doesn't remember much about it since he came when one year old to the present Jacob Cromely farm, where he lived until he moved into town. He has held a large number of offices during these may years, among those he can recall being treasurer of the Chamber of Commerce for five years; treasurer and trustee of the K. of P. Building Corporation for five years; town treasurer for eight years; helth officer for three years; secretary of the school board for three years; township trustee for six years, buring which time the gravel roads and the new library building were started, and the Burr Oak schoolhouse was built; secretary-treasurer of the Evangelical church for more years than he can exactly remember, though his first term, started in 1899, church trustee for 30 years; superintendent of the Evangelical Sunday school for 19 successive years, and assistant for six years.

He played for many years in the town band, first joining the organization in 1895.

William S. EASTERDAY, 83 years old, a Culver funeral director for 53 years, died Wednesday.

He was an active church worker and held township and school offices for several years.

Survivors include three daughters, Miss Bess EASTERDAY, Culver; Mrs. Clista FERRIER, Rushville, and Mrs. Daisy LOWRY, Madison, S.D.; two sons, William R. EASTERDAY, Culver , a partner in the funeral establishment, and Chester EASTERDAY, Logansport.

Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon in the Emmanuel Evangelical church, Culver .

    William Samuel Easterday, age, 83, senior member of the Easterday Funeral Home - partneship, died at his home here early Wednesday morning after an illness of tow weeks due to advanced age.

    He was born in Marion county, Ohio, Jan. 4, 1863, and when on year old moved with his parents to a farm on the south shore of Lake Maxinkuckee where he continued to live until moved to Culver and entered buisness.

    Mr. Easterday was CUlver's oldest business ma from point of years in active business, having purchased he local funeral home on Nov, 1893.

    His partner is a sson William R. Another son Chester H. operates the Easterday Funeral home in Logansport.

    Easterday was prominent in Civic and church activities, having held a large nu,ber of offices as well as taking a deep interest in all local affairs.

    He was tresurer of the Chamber of COmmerce for a long period; treasurer and trustee of the K. of P. Building Corporation for several years; town tresurer for eight years; town helth officer for three years; secretary of the school board for three years; township trustee for six years; secretary and treasurer of the loal Evangelical church for many years with his first term starting i 1899; trustee of the church since it was located her; Sunday school superintendent for 19 successive years; assistant superintendent for six years and played in the town band for many years, having joined the organization in 1895.

    Surviving besides the two sons mentioned above are three daughters: Mrs. Clista ferrier of Rushville, INd.; Miss Bess Easterday at home and Mrs. Daisu Lowry of Madison, S. D.; seven grandchildren and give great grandchildren

    Funeral Services will be held at the Emmanuel Evangelical church Friday at 2:00 p.m. (daylight saving time) with Rev, F. C. Wacknitz ub charge.

    Interment will be in the Culver cemetery.

W. S. Easterday
    William Samuel Easterday, son of Daniel and Julia Myers Easterday, was born in Marion county, Ohio., on January 4, 1863 and died at his home in CUlver on Oct. 2, 1946, after a short illness

    When a child, he moved with his parnets to a famr on the south shore of Lake Maxinkuckee where he grew to manhood.

    In January 1884 he was united in marriage to Susanna ELizabth Romig, who preceded him in death May 28 1933. To this union were born seven children: Alvin, deceas; Mrs. Clista ferrier of Rushville, Ind.; Chester Logansport; Will and Bess Culver; Mrs. Daisy Lowry, South Dakota and CHauncey, deceased.

    Also surviving are seven grandchildren: Charles Ferrier, CUlver; Paul Easterday and Mrs. ELzetts SMith, Loganpsort; Mrs. Lucreta FUrman, St. Joe., Mich; John William Lowry Rapid CIty SOuth Dakokta; Nancy and SUsanna Lowry Madison South Dakota.

    Three grandchildren: Oliver Ferrier, Robert Lowry and Raymond Easterday prdeded him in death.

    He was a life long member of the Evangelical church and had beem trustee of the Evangelical church since it was established in Culver. He had been a delegate to the Indiana ANnual COnference a number of times and also was a delegate to the Evangelical General Conference held in Milwaukee sever years ago.

    HIs death brings to a close his activities in the operation of his funeral home for the past fifty-three years. - Oct 9 1946 Citizen
