West Side Main Street
I wrote this up for Jeff Kenney for the library site - and I have expanded it some since I wrote it originally. I will
try and do more with it - Do you remember the businesses of downtown Culver, the years, etc. - Can you expand upon
this listing? If so e-mail me -
At least this is a start - Another part of history to be recorded slowly as I work on finishing the lake part up - It
will be an ever changing page - why? because of a kids memory of the 1960's - to what it was in the 1970's, 1980's,
1990's, 2000's - then you mix in the past and try and re-create - what was - and is now and try to make an accurate
record of history for Main Street Culver (an impossible task - maybe?)! NOW that is a challenge I present to
everyone!

This is just a rough beginning of this listings. With no addresses in the early years just the street name it is hard
to place them correct - if you remember won't you help?

1933 - Mar 15 - Traffic Light POst Removed from Corner
The large round cement post that once held the traffic light at the corner of
Main and Jeferson streets has been removed and a small turtle back placed
there for the guidence of traffic in turning that corner.
The traffice light was installed about seven years ago, but was seldom used as
it was found to be an unncessary signal and a general nuisance.
A few weeks ago a truck eliminated the traffic light by the simple method of
knoocking it off, so the town board decided to finish the job by taking the
large base out.
1960 - Jul 27 - AT 12:50 P.M. LAST FRIDAY a traffic signal light was placed in operation at the busy Sank corner intersection of Main and Jefferson Streets in downtown Culver. There was
much excitement as scores of motorists innocently ignoring the new warning received a friendly word of caution from police officers Don Mikesell and Jim Cox. A crew from the Northern
Indiana Public Service Company is seen placing the signal light in position. (Photo by Carl Adams Jr |

Culver's New Street Light
Enterprising Citizens Conclude to Remain in Darkness no more
Seven or eight of the people in the neighborhood of the Evangelical church
have combined and bought a gasoline gas lamp which is erected on an 18-foot
post on Arthur Castleman's corner.
The lamp has an ulluminating strength of 1000 candle power and casts a
light a clock and a half in each direction on Main Street.
A simple arrangement lower and raises the lamp. A clock with a trip
connecting with a shut-foof valve automatically stops the flow of gasoline
at any hour desidered, thus extinguishing the light.
The outfit complete cost $35. and its is asserted that 30 cents a week
will pay the cost of running it until 11 o'clock.
Residents in the neighborhood are well pleased with th light which is
furnished by the Night Light Co. of Chicago through their local agent,
H. E. Conn.
Note Castleman residence was in the vacant south lot next to the
EUB church corner of Mill and Main.

McGill's
1987 - 2000, May - Walker / Tenneco
McGills began discussing sale of the building with Tennaco as early as 1985
That same year, McGills representatives began discussions with the Walker Muffler
company in Racine, Wisconsin, in hopes of selling the building to them, a sale
which finally took place in 1991. , "the world's leading producer
and marketer of ride control and exhaust products and systems," would occupy the
building for nine years, though it's apparent from an article on the company's
website that an earlier closing would have been preferred.
Instead, the Culver plant shut its doors July 14, 2000, leaving it vacant for the
next few years, though several individuals and entities in Culver worked vigorously
to facilitate a new tennant occupying the space

had outlets in South Bend and Warsaw as well, and was a Christian-owned (by David Weinberg)
business whose workday started with a collective staff prayer. The company relocated to
Louisville, Kentucky.
2002- present - Portside Marina; Heinman & Bailey LLC
Tom Heineman, who had come to Culver in 1985 to work at the Culver Marina, partnered with
fellow Marina worker Glenn Bailey to launch Portside Marina, renting out the 8,000 square
foot building. By that fall, with 75 boats in its care, Portside had well exceeded its goal
of maintaining 50 boats, and the crew winterized over 250 boats that same year. By 2003,
Portside had begun selling pontoon and ski boats, and manufacturing piers, eventually
purchasing the property -- as demands for storage space increased -- that autumn.
