1961 Lake Association News

1961 - Jun 14 - lake Association adds to its many services - patrol car gets three-way radio

With the opening of the summer season the Lake Maxinkuekee Association through Secretary Don G. Trone announces the acquisition of a new three-way radio telephone for the Lake patrol car.

This new installation makes .possible instant communication with the Town of Culver police car as well as the office of the Marshall County sheriff, and the Lake patrol car may be reached in turn with either of the other two points of contact.

This new service already has proven its worth in the accident at the Culver airport last week. Patrolman - James R. Cox was able to call the sheriff's car at once, and within ten minutes Sheriff Jerry Greenlee was at the scene. Luckily there were no injuries, but had there been an ambulance or the fire department could have been summoned almost instantly.

    No cost to Taxpayers

The cost of this added equipment was borne by the Lake Maxinkuekee Association a n d Culver Military Academy, with no cost to the taxpayers of either the township or county. Our valued and on-the-ball Lake Association is seeking constantly to improve the service to all property owners and the surrounding community, and has been highly complimented by the Indiana State Police and the Marshall County sheriff for its up-to-the- minute equipment in both the patrol oar and the safety patrol boat.
1961 - June 28 Survey Made Of Flow Of Water At Lake Outlet Sanitation Group On The Job
A survey of the outlet of Lake Maxinkuckee has been made by the Lake Maxinkuckee Association's Sanitation Committee, and a large amount of debris and broken cement slabs has been removed.

The Sanitation Committee, headed by Dr. Joseph A. Hafert and aided by several residents of the South and West Shores, recently inspected the obstruction, caused by an accumulation of rocks and broken cement left from the installation of the outlet culverts some time ago.

It was thought such obstruction might be partly to blame for the recent high water level of the Lake.

    Wainscott and Cox Praised

With the cooperation of Officer Don Wainscott of the Conservation Department, and Lake Patrol Officer James R. Cox all of the debris was removed and as a result a greater flow of water from the Lake was obtained.

While this accumulation of debris was not the sole cause of the high water level, the greater part being the result of recent heavy rainfalls, it was felt that the outlet culverts should be cleaned out and a steadier run-off of water obtained.

    Will Smith Takes Readings

Will E. Smith, 1034 West Shore Drive, takes daily readings of the Lake water level gauge at the outlet, and reports that there has been some slight lowering of the Lake since the outlet was cleared.

Dr. Hafert and his Sanitation Committee are to be congratulated on their efforts to correct this troublesome situation, as reported to The Citizen by Don G. Trone, the. Association's energetic secretary- treasurer.

1961 - June 28 Lake Association Furnishes New Trash Barrels
    > Discher Heads Clean-Up Drive

The access area for boaters on the West Shore of the Lake has been supplied with several new trash barrels, so that waste paper, cartons, and cans may be disposed of by the users of this boating area.

The Lake Maxinkuckee Association, through President Robert J. Discher, Dr. Joseph A. Hafert, and Dr. Kenneth K. Kraning, has obtained these steel barrels and have had them painted with appropriate directions for waste disposal.

    For Small Boat Users

This area, giving public access to the Lake waters for small boat users, was originally installed by the Federal Government, but is administered through the Indiana Conservation Department. It is not a State Highway roadside park, as many persons believe, and no bathing, picnicking, or recreational activities except the launching of small boats is permitted.

Unfortunately the Conservation Department seems to have no funds for the upkeep or policing of the site, so the Lake Maxinkuckee Association has undertaken the supervision and maintenance on a voluntary basis.

    Lots Of Messy Folks

This area, according to Don G. Trone, secretary-treasurer of the Association, is largely used by out-of-state boaters, and as most of them are unfamiliar with Indiana boating laws and seem to care nothing about keeping the area clean or orderly, it becomes necessary that some organized effort must be made to properly police and maintain the landing area.
