...To provide supplemental safety above what the Department of Natural Resources provides for Indianas second largest natural lake, Jane Gund on Monday handed the Marshall County a uditor an initial check for $30,000 for the sheriffs department to take over patrol.

Off-duty personnel, reserves and special deputies will provide an estimated 800 supplemental hours to the regular patrol by using money from the nonprofit LMA and a $30,000 grant from the Department of Natural Resources....

The arrangement is of no cost to taxpayers. The boats were owned by the LMA, and ownership on Monday was transferred to the county....

Ted Schenberg of the LMA said the group was a public charity that provides safety to people on the lake regardless if they are members. "Our purpose is to be an auxiliary group to provide funding the DNR doesnt otherwise provide," Schenberg said....

Gund said that when funding sinks to $1,000, the LMA will replenish funding to $10,000.

Commissioners also signed a memorandum of understanding Monday that outlines lake patrol liability issues, which has been a sticking point for sheriffs to accept in the past. The agreement can be canceled or renewed on an annual basis....

2012 May 12 The Lake Maxinkuckee Association has offered $18,000 toward the purchase of the dog, kennel and training, estimated at $16,500.

2013 - June 7 The Lake Maxinkuckee Association, in partnership with Gary and Eyvonne Aker of the Culver Marina, were responsible for putting a new Lake Patrol boat on Lake Maxinkuckee waters this year.

Arras is a new officer added to The Marshall County Sheriff’s Department. He is a 3 year old Belgian Malinois that was imported from Holland. A Belgian Malinois is a new breed to the United States. They are known as a sheep herding dog but because of their amazing brain and their a athletic ability they make remarkable K-9 dogs.

Arras was purchased and trained through Vohne Liche Kennels in Denver, Indiana. Arras is a trained narcotics detector dog as well as a certified Patrol K9 though the North American Working Dog Association. He is trained to find the drugs marijuana, heroine, cocaine, meth and ecstasy.

Lake Maxinkuckee patrol officers will get a boost in pay. During Monday’s Marshall County Council meeting, Marshall County Sheriff Matt Hassel discussed wages for seasonal deputies who mainly work the lake patrol at Lake Maxinkuckee in Culver. A grant for wages was obtained by the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department and the Lake Maxinkuckee Association is providing a large portion of the wages.

“I’d like to raise that up to $30 an hour,” requested Sheriff Hassel. “We have several police officers from other departments that are willing to do the lake patrol with our guys to help fill in. We just don’t have enough people to cover every shift that’s open. The grant started the Friday before Memorial Day – if we could have it retroactive to the start of this season.”

The current wage is $22.84 an hour.

The council approved support for the amendment to the salary ordinance to accommodate the pay increase request with a retroactive date of May 25. The active season goes through the Labor Day weekend.
