1909 - Aug 12 - MAXINKUCKEE
MAXINKUCKEE The annual meeting of the Maxinkuckee association was held Sunday at the Lake View
hotel with a large attendance.
The reports of the officers showed the affairs of the association to be in splendid shape, the
number of new applications for membership being particularly pleasing, showing that the work
alone has been appreciated by the people whose interests are connected with the welfare of the
lake.
A number of complaints were made to the effect that some of the launches and sailboats were being
run at night without lights, and that unless something were done in the matter these dangerous
proceedings would inevitably result in collisions probably accompanied by loss of life.
The president was authorized to appoint a committee on boats and piers to ascertain the law
concerning the carrying of lights by boats while in use or at anchor, and have such law published.
The attention of this committee was also directed to the resolution passed by the association at
its meeting a year ago, requesting launch owners to use mufflers on their engines or have their
exhaust under water.
The executive committee reported that the following applications for membership had been received
and approved:
C. H. Barnaby, Greencastle;
J. V. Stimson, Huntingburg;
J. D. Ferguson, Logansport;
Otto Stechan, Mrs. A. Gates, Mrs. B. Vonnegut, W. H. Fulton, Indianapolis;
C. G. Bigley, M. R. Cline, W. E. Hand, F. Hessel, A. A. Keen, S. C. Shilling,
T. E. Slattery, Dr. Wiseman, John Osborn, A. B. Holt (honorary). Culver.
By a unanimous vote the action of the executive committee was approved.
On motion of Mr. Vonnegut C A.Bookwalter, mayor of Indianapolis, was unanimously elected an honorary member.
On motion of Mr. Herz the secretary was instructed to draft resolutions on the death of Mrs. A. M.Ogle and
Mr. D. W. Marmon, ex-members.
The president was instructed to appoint five members from Culver to act as a permanent committee on roads,
with authority to look after the work done under the road laws.
On motion of Mr. Herz it unanimously voted that all of officers be re-elected for the ensuing year.

1910 - Sep 1 - MAXINKUCKEE ASSOCIATION
A Number of Matters of Importance to Cottage Owners Receive Merited Attention
The annual meeting of the Maxinkuckee association was held on Sunday, Aug. 21, at the residence of Charles
E. Coffin with the largest attendance of any meeting for several years past.
The following officers were elected for the year 1910-11:
President- W. W. Parsons, Terre Haute.
Vice President- -A. F. Potts, Indianapolis.
Treasurer- -J. O. Ferrier, Culver.
Secretary---Blythe Q. Hendricks, Indianapolis.
Watchman - L. C. Wiseman, Culver.
On account of extra duties assigned to the treasurer he was voted a salary of $25 per year.
A vote of thanks was unanimously given Mr. Coffin, the retiring president, for efficient services during his
term of office. After a general discussion of numerous housbreakings that occurred during the past winter it
was voted to offer a reward of $100 for the conviction of any parties guilty of entering the cottage of any
member of the association.
Mr. Wilson stated that under the present law it was possible for cottage owners to have their road tax worked
out where they desired, and moved that all members of the association authorize the treasurer to pay their taxes
for them, giving him authority to have the road tax worked out. This could only be done, Mr. Wilson stated, by
the members paying their dues to the association early in the fall. After discussion and explanation the motion
was unanimously carried.
The next matter considered was that of taking some action toward getting the level of the lake raised to its normal.
Various means and plans were discussed, but finally a special committee, composed of Messrs. Yandes, Herz and Joseph
Shirk, was appointed to investigate fully and take such action as was necessary.
Complaints were made about the lack of telegraph service during the night, and the railroad committee was instructed
to make an effort to have the telegraph company maintain a night operator during the summer season at Culver.
The committee appointed to look after the lake level was also instructed to see what could be done toward compelling
the passenger steamers and launches on the lake to carry a sufficient number of life preservers to insure safety to
passengers in case of accident or emergency.
Mr. Coffin reported that the following new members had been elected during the past year: Dr. Frank Morrison, Mrs. A. B.
Gates, W. J. Wood, Indianapolis; Henry Meyer, Terre Haute.
Mr. Parsons reported that the United States government has sent blanks, the filling out of which was necessary for stocking
the lake with fish. These blanks had been properly filled and stocking would take place twice a year.
There being no further business the meeting adjourned on motion.
1911 - Aug 24 - LIGHTS ON BOATS
Important Work of Maxinkuckee Association at Meeting Covering Variety of Points
The annual meeting of the Maxinkuckee association was held at the residence of C. E. Coffin Sunday afternoon.
The following officers were elected for the year:
W. W. Parsons, president;
W. H. Falton, vice-president;
A. F. Potts, secretary; J. O. Ferrier, treasurer.
Lights on All Boats.
A general discussion of the recognized danger of allowing boats to travel at night without lights led to the
appointment of a legislative committee consisting of President Parsons, Secretary Potts and Mr. Coffin to
secure necessary legislation requiring all boats to carry lights on all lakes and other waters of the state
on which motor boats are operated.
During the discussion many instances of narrow escapes were cited and it was agreed that the greatest danger
was incurred by those using row boats and sail boats which were often unseen until they shot across the path
of approaching motor boats.
The danger of accidents from this source was regarded so serious by the members present that a second resolution
was passed urged everyone rowing or sailing at night to place some kind of a light in or on the boat.
Need of Better Roads.
The cottagers in many places have been oiling the roads at their own expense, and it was considered that this was
of such convenience and comfort to all using the roads that it would be fair to ask the road supervisor to fill
the chuck holes in the spring before the time for oiling.
Illegal Fishing.
There was a very earnest discuss. ion of the subject of illegal fishing. It was pointed out that the popularity of
Lake Maxinkuckee was very largely dependent on its reputation: as a fishing place, and that many persons who have
been frequenting the lake as a summer resort were considering going elsewhere because the lake was not protected
from illegal fishing by seines, dynamite and spears.
A committee was appointed consisting of Mr. Fulton and Mr. Yandes to cooperate with President Parsons and Mr. Coffin
in securing a special tish warden for this lake.
Great bitterness was expressed when it was shown that some of this illegal work was done by residents of Culver.
It is known that some well-knowm business men who should be models in the observance of the law were among those
guilty of this nefarious praotice.
A considerable contingent of the association stands ready to withdraw its patronage from any one who may hereafter be
implicated in this conduct which is working so much against the reputation of the lake.
$25.00 Reward.
A resolution was passed authorizing the payment of a reward of $25 to anyone furnishing information which shall lead to
the arrest and conviction of any person found guilty of illegal fishing. $100.00 Reward. A report was made of a few
instances of house breaking around the lake.
The association has determined to break up this lawlessness and appeals to all residents of the community to give their
active assistance.
Special detective service will be employed and a resolution was passed authorizing the payment of a reward of $100 for
information which shall lead to the arrest and conviction of any person found guilty of such depredation.
The report showed less of such trespassing than in former years and it is believed that the stringent measures planned by
the association will break it up entirely.
The Ananias Club.
After the regular meeting of the association there was a short session session of the Ananias club whose membership is
confined to the fishermen who still tell of catches in the lake.
As one of the rules of the club provides for the dismissal of any member who questions any statement made by an associate,
fish were reported of a size that would easily account for the high stage of the water before they were removed.
A little jealousy cropped out in the form of a resolution, evidently, directed at George Yandes, providing that no member
should fish more than 18 hours in any one day, and that it was unsportsman like to use the crank wheel of 8 motor boat in
reeling in a bass.
1912 - May 2 - Notice -
It has come to my knowledge that one or more cottages at Lake Maxinkuckee
have been broken into and certain articles stolen.
A reward of $100 is hereby offered for the arrest and conviction of the
preson or persons committting any of these offences.
The Maxinkuckee association will prosecute to the fullest extent of the
law any person or persons known to be guilty of breaking into cottages or
committing any other depredations upon the property of cottagers. -
W. W. Parsons, President Maxinkuckee Assoc.
1912 - Aug 8 - Two Associations
The joint meeting of the Fish and Game Protective and the Lake Maxinkuckee
association at the Palmer house Monday was in the nature of a confernece
relative to the merging of the two associations.
A plan was submitted by President Parsons as the result of the conference
between himself and President Noble.
This was made the subject of general discussion which left the impression that
there would be opposition to this merger.
The Maxinkuckee associaiton will meet a week from Sunday, Aug. 18 at 4 o'clock
to ake definite action regarding the continuance of the organization. - Citizen
1912 - Aug 15 - Maxinkuckee Association - The Macinkuckee Lake Association will hold its
annual meeting at the Palmer House on Sunday, August 17, at 4 o'clock. At the meeting
the question of consolidating with the Lake Maxinkuckee Fish and Fame Protective
association will be acted up. ALl members of the association are strongly urged to attend
this meeting. - W. W. Parsons, President.
