1949 - Aug 17 - Cottagera Plan Association to Promote Welfare of Lake

Safety on the roads arounc the Lake, safety on the Lake itself and sanatation is the challenging program of property owners and interested person who initiated a program last week to enlist the aid if all cottagers here on Lake Maxinkuckee to forming a voluntary association for the promotion of the general welfare of the Lake community.

"Careless and fast driving by autoist on the roadways, reckless handling of power boats, and pollution of the Lake through poorly constructed or devised sewage disposal systems needs immediate correcting". It was pointed out on Monday by a summer resident who has been coming to the lake for the past forty seasons. A house to house appeal is being made to enlist support for the recongnized cause and the workers have been encoutaged by an enthusiastic respone. Every person will be contacted in person or by mail. For those who may be awat from their cottages during the next few days a convenient form is contained in this issue of the Citizen.

Specifically the aim is to secure a deputized ploce official to patrol the highway and th lake. Effort will also be directed toward the acute problem of pollution of the lake.

Lake property owners are being asked to support the program by contrinuting financially to defray the cost of securing a patrolman. In making additional police protection for the propesed safety program those promotomg the association have already held a preliminary conference with Harvey Phillips, Marshall county Sheriff, who has indicated a willingness to cooporate fully with the group.

Each neighborhood group of ten coattages starting from the Jackson cottage on the northeast side and extending entirely arounf the Lake would name a representative to a common council. This council would, in turn, elect an executive committee and secretary-treasurer. The original goup of solicitors not organizing the program will resign as soo as the board is elected, according to the plans.

Solicitors are hoping to complete every detail of the cansaseing soon so that the executive committee can be elected before Labor Day and the plan can then be ready to be put into opertion on June 1, 1950 - Citizen

The formation of a permanent Lake Maxinkuckee Association bevame a reality here last week when members of the Board of Trustees representing all cottage property holders, the Adademy and the town of Culver adopted unanimously a resultion to organize.

The purpose of the newly found assoication is to promote the general welfare of the lake community. Specifically, the organization will take steps to provide a more effective means of securing greater safety on the lake and on the shore roads, and to prevent further polution of the lake.

Carl M. Adams assistant cashier of the State Exchange Bank, of Culver was elected secretary-treasurer of the nine-member executive board which was named by the directors to carry on the work of the association.

Those named to the executive board include: Mrs. H. L. Rector of Peru; R. O. Gass of Huntington; Don Trone of Culver; Dr. Milan Baker, Culver Military Academu; Fred Wallstead, Culver; Harlan Orr, Pymouth attorney; Robert Rust, editor of the Culver Citizen; Mrs. Perry O'Neal of Indianapolis, and Mr. Adams.

The newly founded Lake Maxinkuckee Associaiton will be comparable to the Association of Cottage Holders at other Indiana Lakes including Wawasee and Tippecanoe, where groups of summer residents have been working in close cooperation with state and local officials to cope with saftey and sanatation problems.

Twenty-one members of the board of trusteeseach representing ten neighboring lake property owners, together with representation of the Academy and the town of Culver. participated in the meeting held at the Holiday cottage on the East Shore on Sunday.

Mrs. Perry O'Neal, who with several associates, had unselfishl y conotributed much time and effort in arousing interest in the three-S movement, presided at the meeting. Mrs. F. W. Dunn acted as secretary.

    Discuss Problems

Following a thorough discussion of the various problems, the recommendations for the formation of the association was adopted.

Because the movement is of paramount interest to the entire Lane community it was felt the the organization should be opned to all age agroups and to everyone who would voluntarily like to have a part in the program.

Therefore associate memberships will be made avaiable to thos interested in joining the association.

The executive boar will take steps to carry out the purpose of the organization. A report udring the course of the meeting on Sunday indicated that state agencies are more than willing to cooperate in the adopted program.

It was disclosed that the Indiana State board of Health will shortly issue a full report on any polution of the lake. Findings from the recently conducted surveys and tests are alreasy being studied and B. A. Poole, consulting engineer for the State Board of Health, stated on Saturday that the State Board was anxious to work in close cooperation with the newly formed association, the Academy, and the town of Culver to remedy any adverse sanitation problems - Citizen

1949 - Sep 7 - Lake Safety and Sanitation
No local group ever had a better notice for organizing than the Lake Maxinkuckee Assoication which had its formal inception this Sunday afternoon.

AS an organization it offers a wide oppertunity and privileges to its members and to the public at large in the adopted three-S program of Saftey on the Lake, Saftey onf the roadways and sanatation.

Certainly the program should be of the vital concern to every local citizen for no one can deny the importance of the Lake to this area. It is important not only from the recreational aspects but more especially from the economic view point. The Lake has been a source of real benefit over a long period of time to cottagers and town residents alike. Maxinkuckee has attracted thousands of visitors for various types of recreational purposes

As a natural resource it is deserving of the utmost respect on the part ofall of us. Therefore everyone should carefullly consider our individual and collective responsibilty in keeping the Lake clean andsafe.

The small group of cottagers who have contributed of their time and efforts in actively developing an interest in the new association are deserving of the gratitudeof the entire community . Their promotion of the Association was both unselfish and considerate of all persons and groups who use the Lake.

Among those who had a part in arousing interest in the organization were: Mrs. Perry O'Neal, Mrs. F. W. Dunn, Mrs. K. K. Kraning, Mrs. C. H. Bradley, Mrs. J. S. Kittle, Mrs. C. H. Barnaby, Mrs. H. L., Rector, Mrs. W. C. Griffith, Miss Anne Elsworth, Mrs. JOseph Shirk, Mrs. Peirce Ward and Mrs. Robert Hollowell

It is one thing to formulate and found an organization, it is quite another to carry out a program. The new Association has much to accomplish and with everyone's co-operation and work it bids fair to have a long and successful future, at least we hope so. - Citizen
