Don Trone, chairman of the safety committee of Lake Maxinkuckee Association, Inc., announced today the appointment of James I. Rich, special deputy, for patrol duty on roads around the Lake and patrol duty on the water.

Captain Rich, well known here, will begin his tour of duty tomorrow-, June 1 and continue throughout the summer season to September 15. He will devote the greater amount of his time for the protection and assistance to the Lake community.

The Association’s appointment of Captain Rich as a special deputy, is another step towards the realization of the organizations purpose of developing greater safety on the shore roads and the lake. - 31 May 1950

    PERU - Jack E. Rich, 82, of Peru passed away on Friday, Dec. 28, at Wellbrooke of Wabash. He was born in Culver, on July 31, 1936 to Captain James I. Rich (retired US Army and Culver Military Academy) and Effie Pearl Rich. He graduated from Culver High School in 1954, and joined the US Army immediately following high school, as part of the Corporal Missile Battery. He also played drums in the military band. He married Linda Lou McGowen/Bodey in the Culver Methodist Church in 1958. She preceded him in death on April 3, 2008 after a battle with cancer. Jack was a member of the Free and Accepted Masons, the Scottish Rite, and The Shrine. He was also a member of the New Life United Methodist Church. He was hired by the Indiana State Police on Aug. 1, 1958 as a Communication Officer.He attended ISP Recruit School in 1960 and became a Trooper upon his graduation. He attained the rank of Sergeant with ISP from 1968 until his retirement, Dec. 31, 1990. From 1989 to 1990, Jack served the ISP alongside his two sons. He subsequently served two four- year terms as Miami County Sheriff, beginning Jan. 1, 1991, through Dec. 31, 1998. Jack is survived by his children: Robert Rich (Kathy), Culver; Kimberly Rich Larson (Jim Cooper), Peru; and daughter-in-law Connie Rich, Wabash. Also surviving are seven grandchildren: Alexa Larson, Indianapolis; Anna Rich Uhles (Zachary), Nappannee; Emily Rich, Pittsburgh, PA; Jackson Rich, Culver; Lauren Rich, Connor Rich, and Carson Rich all of Wabash. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, his son married Linda Lou McGowen/Bodey, his brothers Robert and Jay, and his sister Miriam. Visitation will be held from 2 p.m. – 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 3, at Flowers-Leedy Funeral Home, 105 West Third Street, Peru. Masonic service provided by Peru-Miami Masonic Lodge #67 will follow at 7 p.m. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 4, at New Life United Methodist Church, 3039 W 400 N, Peru, with Pastor John Meunier officiating. Burial will take place at the Culver Masonic Cemetery, Culver.       Master Trooper David Rich was shot and killed while investigating an apparent stranded vehicle on U.S. 24 near State Road 115, one mile west of Wabash in Wabash County.

      Master Trooper Rich, who was on his way home in plainclothes and in an unmarked squad car, stopped to help a motorist he believed was stranded at about 4:00 pm. Master Trooper Rich was not aware the man was driving an SUV that his father had reported stolen the previous day from their home in Gaylord, Michigan. Upon approaching the vehicle, the suspect opened fire with a shotgun through the driver's window, striking Master Trooper Rich in the chest who was not wearing a bullet-resistant vest, but had his service weapon drawn.

      The suspect reloaded the shotgun and then committed suicide.

      Master Trooper Rich had served with the Indiana State Police for over 17˝ years and was assigned to the Peru post as a detective. He was survived by his wife, 7-year-old daughter, twin 4-year-old sons, parents, sister and brother, who serves as a captain with the Indiana State Police. His father is a retired Indiana State Police trooper and former two-term Miami County sheriff. In 2008, a Memorial Mile was designated on U.S. 24 on the bypass in Wabash in his honor.

      David Edward Rich, 41, of rural Wabash, Indiana, died Thursday, July 5, 2007 at 3:55PM. He was born April 8, 1966 in Peru, Indiana, to Jack E. and Linda L. Bodey-McGowen Rich. He married Connie S. Cloud on March 28, 1998 in Wabash, Indiana.

      David was a 1984 graduate of North Miami High School. He attended Wabash Friends Church and was a member of Mexico Masonic Lodge, Wabash F.O.P. Lodge 83, Indiana State Police Alliance, and the Indiana Troopers Association. He was a Wabash YMCA T-Ball and soccer coach. His children were his life!

      He is survived by his wife, Connie S. Rich; his daughter, Lauren E. Rich; his twin sons, Carson J. Rich and Connor J. Rich, all of Wabash; his parents, Jack E. & Linda L. Rich of Peru; brother, Robert J. Kathy Rich of Culver; sister, Kimberly S. Larson of Carmel; three nieces, Alexa Larson of Carmel and Anna Rich and Emily Rich of Culver; and nephew, Jack Rich of Culver.

      Funeral services will be held at the Honeywell Center Gymnasium, 275 W. Market Street, Wabash, on Wednesday, July 11, 2007 at 11:00AM with David Phillips officiating. Burial will be in Friends Cemetery, Wabash. Friends may call 2-8PM, Tuesday, July 10 at Grandstaff-Hentgen Funeral Service, 1241 Manchester Avenue, Wabash.

      CULVER - Robert Jay Rich, age 57, of Culver, passed away Feb. 10, after a brave fight against aggressive cancer.

      He was born July 17, 1961, in Plymouth, to Jack and Linda Rich.

      He was a 1979 graduate of North Miami High School and graduated from Indiana Central University in 1983.

      Bob married Kathy Armstrong in 1989 in Culver.


      He was an Indiana State Police trooper for over 30 years, retiring as Captain. After the Indiana State Police he was employed as an agent with the Indiana Gaming Commission.

      Bob was preceded in death by his mother, Linda; father, Jack; and brother David.

      He is survived by his wife, Kathy; his children, Anna Uhles (Zach), Emily, and Jack; his sister, Kim; and numerous in-laws, nieces and nephews.

      His memorial service will be held on Feb. 16, at 12 p.m. at the Memorial Chapel at the Culver Academies in Culver. The family will receive friends starting at 10 a.m., as well as immediately following the service.
