Culver , Ind., Sept 11 - While searchers today were dragging Lake Maxinkuckee for the body Of John C. Maloney, 28, of Vincennes, his companion, R. Kenneth Roberts, 21, of Columbia City, Ind., who escaped death by a hair, when their canoe upset last night, was relating his experiences of the "worst ten minutes" of his life.

The two young men, both linemen for th Pennsylvania railroad, had hired a canoe for a few hours spin over the beautiful lake.

We had been canoeing for about an hour and were more than 500 yards from shore when suddenly, without warning. the canoe upset.", Roberts said. " don't know how it happened, as it took place too quickly. The first thing I knew I was in the cold water and heard Maloney yelling.

Loses Hold on Canoe.

"Maloney was shouting for help, He was terribly excited. I helped him the best I could. He could swim but was too excited to do that. I don't think he got cramps. I helped him to the overturned boat, but he was too excited it seemed to hold on.

I was rapidly getting exhausted myself. Then I heard Maloney cry out: "I can't make it." He went under. I was getting numb from the cold and was holding on for flife.

"Maloney went under about five minutes after the canoe overturned, I should judge. It was another five nimutes before a motor boat cam chugging to the scene. They p ulled me into the motor boat just as I was about near the end of my strenght.

Maloney went down in forty feet of water. DiIvers who tried to locate the body immediately after the tragedy, had no luck. Draggin was resorted to then

The victim was an orphan and lived in Vincennes, where his body will be sent when it is found.

Roberts is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Adam Roberts of Columbia City.
