Maxinkuckee Lake claims first victim

Member of orchestra loses his life while swimming at Culver

Culver - Apparently becoming excited when the boat from which he and a fellow swimmer were diving, slipped away in Lake Maxinkuckee Wednesday afternoon, Raymond T. Burton, 25, member of the Jack Crawford orchestra of Los Angles, drowned. his companion bob Schreiber twenty-four, also a member of the orchestra, made a heroic endeavor to save Burton, then reached the boat safely but was near exhaustion when rescued in boats reached the scene of the tragedy.

The body of Burton was recovered by divers at 6 o'clock last night. expert swimmers from the Culver Military Academy in the search for the body and remained on duty until it was recovered.

The Crawford orchestra played at the academy Tuesday night and the members were spending a few days at the lake before the jump to Louisville for an engagement.

Burton and sheriff had entered the lake at the beach near the Pennsylvania station. they later secured a boat and had gone to a point one hundred fifty feet from shore when the drowning happened.
