Sailboat Capsizes

Sailboat Capsizes; Two Men Rescued

Ross Jordan and his 16-year old son, Brian, of Route 3, Kokomo, were rescued from Lake Maxinkuckee Sunday afternoon after their sailboat had capsized. 'Gusty winds were the cause of the accident. The men, who had been in the water for approximately an hour, called for help, and were seen by Mr. and Mrs. Frank B. Wilkinson of 2410 East Shore Drive. The Wilkinsons used their boat to rescue the men from the lake. Both men were wearing heavy clothing and life jackets. They had tried to right the sailboat, but it had shipped water and could not be righted. The Wilkinsons took the men to Allen's Boat Company on the West Shore. From there they were transported by Mac Scruggs to their car. Neither were injured.

Several aided in the recovery of the sailboat. The mast had to be removed before the boat could be towed to shore. Those who assisted in beaching the sailboat were Verlin Shaffer and three firemen, Ray Houghton, Jay Snyder, and Verl McFeely.

Mrs. Edwin Becker, of Logansport, whow a s spending the weekend at their cottage on the East Shore, also saw the men in the water and called the Culver Fire Department. WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 7, 1964
