James Green  

About 1859, James Green came to Union Township, where he met and married Emeline Blanchard.

From One Township's yesterdays:

..The other Green family to be counted among the early settlers of Union township is that of James and Emeline Green. James came from Jennings county, Indiana, in about the year 1859.

Apparently he came while still a single man, for he was married to Emeline Blanchard, September 9, 1860

When he first came to the west shore of Lake Maxinkuckee where Long Point is located, there was no one established there.

He bought all the land between Maxinkuckee and the little lake, including all of Long Point, the gravel pit property and adjacent acreage.

The original Green homestead is still standing to this day, but not on its first site. It is now on the rise of the ground between the two lakes.

The house originally stood close to the lake where the railroad right-of-way is now. We are told that the railroad came through in such a hurry, moving northward to terminate as while at Marmont Station hat construction work had reached the house before the movers could get it moved. In fact, the tracks came pretty close to being laid right under the house, which was hurriedly moved out of the way and back on the hill where it now stands, today untenanted.

When James Green settled at the southern base of Long Point and for a considerable period thereafter, he did not anticipate that his waterfront property would at some future date be in such demand by prospective summer cottagers as to command rich prices. So it was that, before the great in rush of the "lake people", he without ado and complacently thinking his deals successful sold good-sized lots to folks for about fifty dollars apeice. Some he almost gave away. His son got one for doing some extra chores. It was not so many years later that those self same "cheap" lots were in great demand for prices ranging into the thousands.

On Long Point in the 'seventies, James Green had twenty acres of land left, and between the two lakes 83.47 acres.

James Green was born in Jennings county, Indiana, March 14, 1834, and died in Union township December 20, 1911, at the age of seventy-seven.

The children of James and Emeline Green were eight in number, six sons and two daughters. Two sons and one daughter preceded their father in death. Surviving him were his wife; four sons, Joseph and John of Colorado, George of Tennessee, and Frank of Culver ; one daughter Mrs. Charles Myers of Culver ; and one sister. James Green united with the Baptist Church at Marmont in 1866, and later, upon his removal from this village, transferred his membership to the Methodist Church. In 1894, he was recieved into the fellowhsip of Grace Reformed Church of Culver , where he remained a faithf ul member till his death.... Death of James Green

The expected death of James Green occured on Wednesday evening of last week at 8 o'clock.

The funeral was held on Friday at the Reformed Chruch, Pastor Micahel preaching the sermon.

The bearers were Charles Stahl, L. C. Zechiel, Jacob H. Zechiel, Henry Zechiel, William Listenberger and Henry Pecher, all are members of the same bible class.

James Green was born in Jennings county, Ind., March 14, 1834.

He was married to Emeline Blanchard Sept. 9, 1860.

To this union were born eight children, six sons and 2 daughters, all of whom lived to grow to manhood and womanhood. Two sons and one daughter have preceded him in death.

He leaves to mourn his loss his wife, four sons (Joseph and John of Colorado, George of Tennessee and Frank of Culver ) one daughter, (Mrs. Charles Myers of Culver ), one sister, numerous other relatives and a host of friends.

He united with the Baptist church of Culver in 1866. Later, upon removal from Culver , he transfered his membership to the Methodist Church. In 1894 he was recieved into the fellowship of Grace Reformed Church of Culver where he remained a faithf ul member until his death. He lived an earnest, consistent Christain life. While here here he was a faithful member of the church militant; death only served to make him a member of the church triumpant. In him was f ullfilled the word of scripture which saith "Thou shalt come to they grave in a fll age, like a stock of grain cometh in the season. Culver Citizen, 28 Dec 1911

After the deaths of the Green's, the house was rented to other families until about 1929/1930. It was then abandoned and remained vacant for 20 years inhabited only by mice, squirrels and other woodland creatures until it was purchased in 1949/1950 along with 15 acres by the Allen's.

John married Perie HOCKETT daughter of Henry Arthur HOCKETT and Mary E. BALDWIN on 20 Sep 1908 in Eagle, Eagle Co., Co. Perie was born Mar 1888 in Co. She died before 1914 in Oak Creek, Co and was buried in Gypsum Cem., Gypsum, Eagle Co., Co.
