John Mitchell

Don't get excited when you look at this picture for there really is nothing wrong with your eyesight. The subject was standing in front of the three-sided mirror in Mitchell & Stabenow's Clothing store, so there are not four John Mitchells after all.

By the way, did you know that this business is the oldest in town in point of location and firm memberhsip?

Mr. Mitchell was born in New York City, but came to Culver in 1906 from Chicago where he and his partner, Otto Stabenow, had worked together in a clothing house.

Mr Mitchell has probably set a local record for continuous office holding by being treasurer of the Culver lodge of Masons since 1920. He had previously been secretary and a trustee of the same organization.

Mr. Mitchell was an original member of the library board, when the library was located over the Goss Hardware store, and was president for several years.

He has also served on the town school board and as township Red Cross Chariman. At one time he was scretary and later vice president of the old Commercial Club, now known as the Chamber of Commerce. John has been an officer in the Grace Reformed church more years than he can remember and now serves as elder and trustee of the church and treasurer on the Sunday School
