1956 - Aug. 15 - Norris Wharton Buys R & J. Food Market On East Shore Drive.

    Norris Wharton, recently of Lafayette, has purchased the R & J. Food Market at 1355 East Shore Drive (Maxinkuckee Landing) from Mr. and Mrs. Robert Jackson and will continue to operate the thriving meat amd grocercy establisment unde the same name.

    Mr. Wharton and his wife Maye Ruth will rside in the Roscoe Stevens Apartments adjoining their store.

    The Wahrtons have four children... Mr. Wahrton is a graduate of the Winamac High School...

    May R. Wharton, 83, 515 E. 13th Street., Winamac, died April 14 at Pulaski Memorial Hospital.

    On Nov. 7, 1913, in Newtown, she was born to Henry and Nettie Ellen (Cary) Bradford.

    On April 9, 1932 in Monticello, she was married to Norris L. Wharton who died Nov. 14, 1970.

    Mrs. Wharton, a former resident of Francesville, Culver, Lafayette, and the state of Georgia, was a homemaker and former owner of the Manor Market in Culver. She was a member of the Baptist church in Lizella, GA. She is survived by a daughter, Barbara Laney, Kalamazoo, Mich.; three sons, James, Lizella, Ga.; John, Clarks Hill; and Timothy, Hamlet; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a sister, Agnes Hall, Francesville.

    She was preceded in death by two sisters.

    Graveside services were conducted April 16 with the Rev. William Mathys officiating. Burial was in the Winamac Cemetery. - Pulaski County Journal 23 Apr 1997
