WILLIAM ALLEMAN The passing of William Alleman at his home just south of Argos last Thursday morning marks the going hence of a citizen who had long been a prime factor in our community. For three-quarters of a century his lot had been cast among us, so that most of us had come to think of him not only as one who had always been identifled with the Argos neighborhood but as one who would remain so - a real landmark, as it is often expressed. A conspicuous void is therefore sensed in the knowledge 6f his departure.

Mr. Alleman was a man of most pleasing and engaging personality. His happy, genial disposition fairly oozed the gospel of joviality and good cheer among those with whom he came in touch and won for him an unusually wide circle of triends. And there was that philosophical poise in his being that calmed his soul in the hour of the most trying adversity. He had the happy facility of being able to see the brighter side and certainly none enjoyed life better. This was made possible, in part, by the tact of his robust physique and his almost perfect immunity from sickness. Even in his passing no marked ailment developed just a general giving way in ripe old age.

He was a man of rare business acumen, being almost uniformly success• ful in the many and varied enterpirses in which a long, active life had en• gaged him. Farmer, teacher, landlord, merchant, banker, township trustee, mill operator all these activities bad claimed a share of his attention, but it was as a dealer in live stock that the superb energies of his life were devoted and directed. For more than three decades, he and his brother David and Wm. Voreis, constituted a firm that maintained an enviable record in the buying, feeding and shipping of live stock. He is the last survivor of this trio, and had continued his interest in stock to the very end of his active life.

Youngest son and one of a family of twelve children that blessed the union of Leonard and Mariah (Siple) Alleman, William was born near Wooster, Ohio, on the 10th day of September, 1842. At the age of eight he came with his parents to Marshall county, Indiana, settling on what has long been known as the old Alleman homestead four miles southwest of Argos in Green township. Here he grew to maturity, getting such rudiments of learning as the rural schools of the time afforded, and his subsequent life has been lived in and near Argos.

In 1870 he was united in marriage with Amelia Hudson and three children were born unto this union: Rosa Maud, (now Mrs. Elias Davis) Grace Hudson and Howard Lee, all of whom are now residents of Argos. The devoted wife and mother was called hence in 1907.

In the fall of 1918 he was again united in marriage with Mrs. Arwesta Hawk, who survives him.

An outstanding characteristic in Mr. Alleman's life is exemplified in his record as a member of th local I. 0. 0. F. lodge, of which he had been and active, working member for more than half-a-century, or since 1874. And he has been affiliated with the church since July, 1894, when he and his companion united with the M. E. church of this place. Passing out March 12, 1925, he haa attained the age of 82 years, six months and two days.

Besides the bereît companion and, children, he 18 survived and mourned by two sisters, Mrs. Ann Mariah Hill of LaFayette, Indiana, and Mrs. Mary M. Newhouse of Sedro Woolley, Wash. He will be missed, also, by many relatives and a legion of friends.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at two o'clock at the M. E. church, in charge of the pastor, Rev. A. E. Bagby, with the Odd Fellow brotherhood attending in a body, Interment following at Maple Grove. - Argos Reflector 19 Mar 1925
