Franklin Paul Rutledge BIRTH 16 Dec 1918 Jefferson County, Kentucky, DEATH 10 Mar 2010 Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio, BURIAL Evergreen Cemetery Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky

F. Paul Rutledge, age 91 years, passed away at Llanfair Retirement Community on Wednesday March 10, 2010.

Mr. Rutledge was Professor Emeritus of Theater at the University of Cincinnati. Born in Louisville, Kentucky, he attended the University of Louisville and Western Kentucky University from which he earned his undergraduate degree.

He joined the US Air Force Cadet Corp in 1941, earned his wings and served in the US Air Force for four years. He attained the rank of Captain. Upon discharge, he entered the University of Wisconsin and received his graduate degree in Theater.

Mr. Rutledge came to the University of Cincinnati in 1949 and taught there for thirty-five years. Under his guidance, the Theater Area has developed into a full department offering Graduate Degrees.

In 1950, he founded the Maxinkuckee Summer Playhouse in Culver, Indiana and continued as Managing Director for 13 summers.

During his tenure as Head of the Theater Program, he served as Director and Advisor for the University of Cincinnati Mummers Guild, a Liberal Arts student organization. He also served as Founder and Director of the UC Theater and for the Cincinnati Woman’s Club Players Group.

In the late 1960’s, he traveled with members of the Cincinnati Recreation Department to Jeffersonville, Indiana to give advice on their purchase of the Showboat Majestic, which was out of service and moored there. The decision was to buy the Showboat if Mr. Rutledge would serve as its Directing Manager, which he did for seventeen years.

During this time on the University of Cincinnati Campus, he worked with Dr. Jack Watson and Helen Laird to formulate and establish the Musical Theater degree program within the College Conservatory of Music.

Upon retirement from the University of Cincinnati and the Showboat, he traveled extensively in England and on the Continent, lecturing on American Theater at various Scholastic institutions.

Mr. Rutledge is survived by his sister, Ethel Mae Gross of Louisville, Kentucky and six nieces and nephews.
