Maxinkuckee Vacation Club "Legg's club house " "Garden Patch"



It is said that earlier it was a barn that was dragged across the lake ice from the west to east shore many winters ago.

Formerly property of Harvey Shafer , (2450 E. Shore Ln.)



Have seen it refered to as the "Legg's club house "



1940 - May 1 - Summer Club For Girls on Lake Maxinkuckee Being Organized
    with the summer vacation season just ahead, announcement of interest to young women from 14-18 years of age recently in thei Indianapolis "Star" outlined plans for a summer residence club on the east shore of Lake Maxinkuckee.

    The club will be operated and chaperoned under the direction of Mrs. Winfred G. Legg, in the buildings known as the "Garden Patch" on the East Shore road, formerly the Harvey Shafer property

    Membership will be limited and the group will be known as the Maxinkucke Mariners Club. Recreation, sports and social activities will include boating of all kinds, swimming, hiking horseback riding, dancing tennis, bad mitten, ping-pong, shuffleboard, croquet, bicycling, indoor roller skating and golf.

    Mrs. Legg, sponsor of the vacation program, is well-known for her wide experience with Girl scouts and various camp activities. She was born and educated in London England, but has resided in this country since becoming a citizen of the United States .

    Mrs. Legg will be assisted by her daughter Miss Sylvia Legg, a student at Indiana University and Mrs Phillip Ruth of Terre Haute

    Registration will open soon and the club will bin active session during the months of July and August.

1940 - Jul 31 New Group of Gil Scout Mariners Here
    A new group of Girl Scout Mariners is at the camp on East Shore Lane.

    They are: Alice Greene, Lois HIlkene, Betsey Harding, Carolyn Kiger, Eleanor Hajen, Peg Gray all of Indianapolis; Claire Case of Logansport; Katherine Kernkler of Terre Haute and Peggy Poston of Attica. Mrs. Winifred S Legg is director, Mrs. Phil Roth, housemother; Marguerite Barnes and Sylvia Legg counselors and Marjorie Roth and Helen Terhourst, junior counselors.


1945 - May 9 - Winifred G. 1946 Jul 21 - Miss Sue and Billie Redenbacker, daughters of Mr. and Mrs O. C. Redenbacker of Princeton, enjoying a game of cards on one of the piers at Lake Maxinkuckee. The girls are members of the "vacation Club".

1947 - Jul 2 Mrs. Winifred Legg has opened the Vacation Club and the girls will arrive July 15 for a six period. Mrs Legg is visiting her daughter in Elkhart until July 12.

1947 - Aug 21 - Visit at Club on Lake Maxinkuckee

Vacationing this summer at the Maxinkuckee Vacation Club on Lake Maxinkuckee are nine Indianapolis girls. Miss Winifred Legg, formerlu matron of Mason Hall at Depauw University, is director of the club

1948 - Aug 28 - Hambergers fries on the shore of Lake Maxinkuckee were often helf by girls spending the summer at the Maxinkuckee Vacation Clung under the direction of Mrs. Winifred Legg. Indianapolis girls at the picnis were (left to right) the Misses Martha Madden, Patricia Locke, Jeanne Hargitt, Charlotte Havens, Diana Fisbeck, Geraldine Scott, Carol Barrett, Nancy Flora, Jean Smith, and Salley Gurley. 1948 - Aug 29 - Subbeds enjoy picnic - Outdoor picnics are a part of the schedule for subdebs summering at the Maxinkuckee Vacation Club on Lake Maxinkuckee, Culver. It was bought by the Maxinkuckee Playhouse in 1950 and in 1955 a new playhouse was built when it closed in 1961 was soon torn down and the "new" playhouse and land were sold to Gene Furry, (2420 E. Shore Ln.) and Dwight Wildemuth, (2450 E. Shore Ln.)
