1905 - Jun 22 - D. B.Young has placed a new four-horse-power Fairbanks-Morse
gasoline engine in the Howard & Davis property, which will be used in their ice cream
factory.
1906 - May 17 - Thge concrete floor for the new Howard & Davis ice cream factory and
bake shop was completed last week, and is a good job of work. The carpenters are now
engaged on the superstructure. Mr. Menser is making a good improvement and Howard &
Davis will be soon equipped in fine shape for the business.
1906 - Aug 9 - Howard's ice cream factory has added an ice crusher, with a capacity of
100 pounds, to its machinery. The factory can now turn out 100 gallons per day
1906 -Aug 16-The Howard ice cream factory manufactured nearly 300 gallons of ice cream
last week
1908 - Jan 23 - Howard Puts Up Ice - G. R. Howard on Monday complested the job of filling his
250-ton house with 9-inch ice from little Lake. He is the first to do any cutting this season. Last
year on the 30th of January, Medbourm, Walter and the Vandalia began putting up 7-inch ice
1908 - May 7 - Howard's ice cream factory has secured a nice line of business for the
present season. It will supply the retail trade of twelve cutomers in ten towns.
These, with his local trade, will work the factory to its full capacity.
1908 - Dec. 17 - A Buiness Change -
G. R Howard has disposed of his bakery business to
Daniel R. Wolf of Syracuse, Ind. who takes possession today. Mr. Howard will hereafter
devote his time to his ice cream business which is growing into large proportions, and
will also engage in the manufacture of pop. Another ice cream machine will be installed,
and a pop-making machine with a capacity of 120 cases per day will be put int operation.
Mr. Wolf expects to build up a a large wholesale trade in bakery goods. He has not yet
decided whether to continue the retail business or not. If not, the present bakery
store room will be rented for other purposes.
1909 - Mar 11 - Howard is putting up a building in the rear of his house lot for and ice
cream factory
1909 - Apr 22 - Howard's ice cream factory building has been under construction during
the past week. The material in Howard's old ice house at Little lake had been used. The
building is 22 X 28, 12 feet in the clear, and will cost outside of the old material, about $400
1908 - Jul 9 - Howard's ice cream factory sold 250 gallons,and the bakery turned out 5,200
buns besides extra bread, pies and cakes.
1906 - Aug 9 - Howard's ice cream factory has added an ice crusher, with a capacity of 100

1910 - mar 24 - G. R. Howard camr from Chicago Saturday to open his
ice cream and pop factory for the season.
1910 - Aug 11 - G. R. Howard, Culver's famous ice cream man, has bought a lot east of Main Street back of the
blacksmith shop and after the close of the season will put up a building for his ice cream and pop factory using the
material in his present factory.
1911 - Jan 27 - Will Build on New Lot. - Geo. R Howard Has bought a $200 lot north of A. L. Warner's in the
DIllon & Medbourn addition and in the fall will erect a cement block building, 24X54; two stories, for an ice
cream and pop factory. The second sotry may possibly be used as temporary livinv quarters for the family pending
theerectionofahous on the east end of the lot.
1911 - Mar 11 - Howard is putting up a building for an ice cream factory on therear of his
residence lot.
1911 - Aug 24- Howard has begun work on his ice cream factory on Aurora Borealis hill,
otherwise the Dillon & Medbourn addition.
1911- Nov. 9 - G. W. {R} Howard expects to get his ice cream factory and household chattels
settled in his new cement building on Aurora Borealis heights next week.
1912 - JANUARY 1, — Howard's old ice cream and pop factory building has been bought by Mrs.
Rhumphrey and has been torn down for removal to her farm where it will be rebuilt into a barn.
1917 - Aug 1 - The ices cream factory turned out 264 gallons Sunday. Is former best record
was 219 galllons on July

1917 - Oct 24- Trades Factory for Farm - G. R. Howard has traded his ice cream factory to
Austin Romig for the latter's 68-acre farm in West township. The factory was valued at
$5,300 and the farm at $5,500. While Mr. Howard gets pssession of the farm at once he
wil not move untill March.
1918 - Jan 16 - G. R. Howard of South Bend came down Monday to see how his daughter,
Mrs. Ada Poor, who has been living alone with her children at the ice cream factory,
was getting through the severe weather. Mr. Howards says his family are very
comfortably situated in furnished apartements in South Bend, and like their
surroundings and new friends very much. In making the trip down on the first train
that come through from South Bend, he said it was like going through a tunnel
when the cars passed through the great drifts, roof-high, between Twin Lakes and
Culver.
1931 - Nov. 11 - Wayne Von Ehr had purchased the old ice cream factory and will tear it down
and enlarge his garage.

1923 - Jan 10 - Former Culver Woman Succumbs to Cancer
Word was recieved here last week of the death in Hammond of Mrs. George R Howard
on Wedensday evening Jan 3 of last week. Mrs. Howard's malady was cancer of the
stomach. She was up and about her usual household tasks even until New Year's
day.
The Howard family came to Culver a number of years ao, Mr. Howard conducting the City
bakery and the ice cream factory until his departure for Hammond a few years ago.
